Violence Erupts in Rohtak Zila Parishad: Assault on Vice-President Highlights Political Tensions
The political landscape of Rohtak, Haryana, has been thrust into turmoil following a series of violent incidents at the Zila Parishad office. These back-to-back events have not only drawn intense public scrutiny to local governance but also sparked widespread criticism, casting a shadow over the conduct, dignity, and accountability of elected members.
Assault on Vice-President Anil Hooda
In a shocking development, Anil Hooda, the vice-president of the Rohtak Zila Parishad and a prominent leader of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), was assaulted by a group of unidentified individuals at the Zila Parishad office on Friday. Hooda confirmed the incident in an interview with a local YouTube channel, revealing that he was the victim, though he has not yet filed a formal police complaint.
Speaking to The Tribune, Hooda described the attack: "I was talking on my phone while holding a file in my other hand. As soon as I entered my office, some persons attacked me from behind, so I could not identify them. They fled through the rear gate, while several of my friends were waiting at the main gate as we had to go to a programme where INLD leader Abhay Chautala was the chief guest." He added that the assailants' intention appeared to be tarnishing his reputation.
Police Investigation and Viral Video
Despite Hooda's lack of a personal complaint, the police have taken action based on a complaint filed by the office of the Zila Parishad Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Sources indicate that the complaint emphasized how such incidents create panic among the public and obstruct government work, urging authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible.
Sub-Inspector Bijendra, the Station House Officer of Arya Nagar Police Station, stated that an investigation has been initiated. "The assailants will be identified through CCTV footage and appropriate action will be taken against them," he assured. Notably, a video of the assault went viral on social media last evening, believed to have been recorded by one of the attackers, further amplifying the incident's visibility.
Previous Day's Chaos at Zila Parishad Meeting
This assault follows another violent episode that occurred just a day earlier during a Zila Parishad meeting. On Thursday, the meeting descended into chaos as several councillors, including Anil Hooda and Dheeraj Malik, engaged in a physical altercation and exchanged heated words. The incident took place in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner Narendra Kumar and Zila Parishad Chairperson Manju Hooda.
A viral video from the meeting shows Hooda carrying a bamboo stick and chasing a man, highlighting the escalating tensions and lack of decorum in the political arena. These consecutive incidents have raised serious questions about the stability and professionalism of local governance in Rohtak.
Broader Implications for Haryana Politics
The back-to-back violent events have put Zila Parishad politics under a harsh spotlight, with critics pointing to a breakdown in discipline and accountability. The involvement of key political figures like Anil Hooda, an INLD leader, suggests deeper political rivalries at play, potentially impacting public trust in local institutions.
As investigations proceed, the focus remains on whether authorities can restore order and ensure that such incidents do not recur. The situation underscores the need for enhanced security measures and stricter enforcement of conduct rules within political bodies to prevent further violence and maintain public confidence.
