Political Leaders Gather for Ram Navami Yatra in Jalandhar Amidst Controversy
In a significant display of unity and devotion, leaders from across the political spectrum participated in a grand shobha yatra to celebrate Ram Navami in Jalandhar on Wednesday. The event, marked by religious fervor and community spirit, also became a platform for opposition leaders to voice strong criticism against the state government over a recent tragic incident.
Religious Procession Draws High-Profile Attendees
The main stage for the Ram Navami celebrations was established on the premises of Shri Devi Talab Mandir, serving as the starting point for the vibrant procession. Notable figures in attendance included Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi, Leader of the Opposition Partap Bajwa, Punjab Aam Aadmi Party in-charge Manish Sisodia, and Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta. Their presence underscored the cultural and political importance of the event in the region.
The yatra, which commenced around noon and concluded by evening at the same temple, necessitated major traffic diversions to accommodate the large gathering. The procession route wound through key city landmarks such as Adda Hoshiarpur Chowk, Milap Chowk, Jyoti Chowk, Basti Adda Chowk, and Patel Chowk. Adding to the festive atmosphere, tableaux and bhajan groups were integral parts of the yatra, while devotees generously arranged langar services along the entire route, ensuring food and hospitality for all participants.
Opposition Slams Government Over Suicide Case
On the sidelines of the religious festivities, opposition leaders seized the opportunity to lambast the state government regarding the recent suicide of Punjab Warehousing Corporation District Manager Gagandeep Randhawa. BJP Punjab working president Ashwani Sharma expressed deep skepticism about the government's ability to deliver justice to the bereaved family. He asserted that only a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry could ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the matter.
Echoing this demand, Charanjit Singh Channi called for a CBI probe to be conducted under the supervision of a High Court judge. He revealed that he had written to the country's Home Minister, urging a thorough and unbiased investigation into the DM case, and received assurances of a fair probe. Channi further escalated his criticism, alleging a rule of oppression in Punjab, where he claimed people are being looted and subjected to violence. The former Chief Minister accused the government of hypocrisy, stating, "Their own people, under their supervision, are looting Punjab, and they catch a few and put them in jail while calling themselves honest."
This dual narrative of religious celebration and political confrontation highlights the complex interplay between faith and governance in contemporary Punjab.
