Ponda Bypoll Campaign Ends: BJP vs Congress in Goa

Ponda Bypoll Campaign Concludes Amidst Intense Political Rivalry

Campaigning for the highly anticipated Ponda byelection officially drew to a close on Tuesday evening, setting the stage for a crucial electoral battle in Goa. The electorate finds itself deeply divided, torn between established political parties and the personal connections of candidates. While three candidates are officially in the fray for the byelection scheduled for April 9, political analysts widely anticipate the main contest to be a direct and fierce confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress.

Shifting Electoral Dynamics and Voter Roll Revisions

The political landscape of Ponda has undergone significant transformation since the 2022 assembly election. In that contest, the BJP secured the seat by a razor-thin margin of just 77 votes. However, the dynamics have been fundamentally altered for this byelection due to a major revision of the electoral roll. Under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a substantial 3,996 votes were deleted from the voter list.

This byelection marks the first assembly constituency election to be conducted following the publication of the new electoral roll post-SIR. The current total electorate in Ponda stands at 28,161 voters, comprising both male and female electors. This represents a notable decrease from the 32,157 voters registered in 2022. Counterbalancing this reduction, approximately 3,000 new voters have been successfully enrolled, introducing a fresh and potentially decisive demographic into the electoral equation.

Historical Context and Candidate Lineup

The Ponda seat has a complex political history. The BJP has managed to win this constituency on only one occasion, which was in 2022. That victory was facilitated by the dramatic last-minute defection of former Chief Minister and longtime Congress MLA, Ravi Naik, to the BJP just on the eve of the assembly polls. Prior to that event, the seat was traditionally represented by the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), followed by the Congress party.

The 2022 election featured a six-candidate field, with the contest essentially boiling down to a direct fight between Ravi Naik, contesting on the BJP ticket, and Ketan Bhatikar, who was then the candidate for the MGP. The political alliances have since realigned dramatically. The MGP has now formed an electoral alliance with the BJP for this byelection. In a significant twist, Ketan Bhatikar has left the MGP and is now contesting on a Congress ticket. This move has prompted many traditional MGP members and supporters to switch their allegiance to the Congress to back Bhatikar.

Following the death of sitting MLA Ravi Naik in October 2025, who was serving as the Agriculture Minister in the BJP-led coalition government at the time, the BJP has chosen to field his son, Ritesh Naik, as its candidate. The Rashtriya Gomantak (RG) party is actively working to ensure that the Congress secures the seat, while the Goa Forward Party (GFP) has notably declined to support any opposition candidates.

High-Octane Campaigning and Strategic Moves

The BJP has invested considerable resources and effort into securing this byelection, viewing it as a critical precursor to the larger 2027 assembly polls. However, the vigorous ground presence of both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has transformed the contest into a genuinely tough and unpredictable battle. The AAP, in particular, is making its presence felt more strongly compared to the 2022 assembly election, where it managed to secure over 600 votes.

The campaign period was characterized by intense activity, including extensive door-to-door canvassing, numerous corner meetings, and high-profile public rallies. The election was elevated to a high-stakes affair with the participation of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who held significant public meetings in the constituency. Even Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant made almost daily visits to Ponda to bolster the BJP campaign. It is important to note that while the contest is fiercely fought, the actual result will not impact the numerical strength of the current state government.

Analyst Insights on Caste, Community, and Demographics

Senior advocate and respected political observer Cleofato Coutinho highlighted the enduring influence of caste dynamics during election time. "The Bhandari community is consolidating its position against the upper caste. The Vanni community holds a substantial presence in Ponda. To my assessment, they are generally inclined towards the ruling party unless a candidate from their own community, like Rajesh Verenkar, is in the fray," Coutinho stated.

With an estimated 6,500 votes, the minority population is poised to play a pivotal and potentially decisive role in determining the winner in Ponda. "The minority communities are increasingly veering against the BJP. The electoral fate of Ritesh Naik is critically dependent on how much of his personal vote base Ketan Bhatikar can retain, a base he has carefully nurtured over a long period," Coutinho added.

Over recent years, Ponda has evolved into a more metropolitan and urban area. It is now home to a significant number of residents originally from Rajasthan, Kerala, and Karnataka, which has substantially changed the social and political dynamics of the constituency. The BJP strategically held meetings with these various communities that have settled in Goa from outside the state, actively seeking their support. Conversely, the Congress is heavily banking on securing the minority vote to help them sail through to victory.

Confident Claims and Awaiting the Verdict

A political observer noted that on the surface, it appears political parties are supporting their larger alliance partners in this byelection, but the final results will reveal the underlying reality. "The result of the byelection will bring clarity to the major parties regarding whether their alliance partners have genuinely supported their candidates," the observer remarked.

The Congress has officially fielded Ketan Bhatikar, while the AAP candidate is Geetesh Naik. As the campaign dust settles, all three major political parties—BJP, Congress, and AAP—have publicly expressed strong confidence in winning the Ponda seat, each predicting a victory with a substantial margin. The electorate now holds the power to deliver the final verdict on April 9.
