Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a significant tribute to one of the state's most revered freedom fighters, Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab. The announcement came during an event marking Mahatab's 39th death anniversary in Bhubaneswar on Friday.

A Lasting Tribute to a State Icon

Chief Minister Majhi declared that the state government will install a full-length statue of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab in the capital city, Bhubaneswar. He emphasized that honouring the state's eminent personalities is a moral duty of the government. Majhi noted that, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, the administration is committed to observing the birth and death anniversaries of such figures in their native villages.

Paying rich tribute, Majhi stated that Dr. Mahatab led and inspired numerous movements and protests in Odisha during the freedom struggle and in the years that followed. He highlighted the unique connection and pride for Odias, as the All-India Independence Struggle Day is observed on Mahatab's death anniversary. Dr. Mahatab holds a distinct place among the country's leading freedom fighters, the CM asserted.

Enhanced Support for Freedom Fighters and Their Families

Addressing freedom fighters and their families at the event, CM Majhi outlined concrete steps taken by his government to ensure due recognition for their sacrifices. A major announcement involved a substantial increase in financial support.

The monthly pension for freedom fighters who were jailed during the Emergency period has been doubled from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000. Furthermore, these benefits have been extended to their spouses and unmarried daughters. For freedom fighters who were not imprisoned, the monthly pension has been raised from Rs 9,000 to Rs 15,000.

In a specific provision for a group of detainees, Majhi added that 152 freedom fighters arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency are now receiving a monthly pension of Rs 20,000.

Mahatab's Enduring Legacy for Modern Odisha

Speaking at the same event, Works, Law and Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan underscored Dr. Mahatab's foundational role in shaping contemporary Odisha. He credited Mahatab for the state's present territorial identity, stating it would not have been possible without his efforts.

Harichandan elaborated that Dr. Mahatab laid the groundwork for comprehensive development across key sectors. His vision and initiatives formed the foundation for progress in infrastructure, industry, agriculture, and irrigation in the state, creating a pathway for Odisha's future growth.

The announcements reflect the state government's focused approach on preserving historical legacy while providing tangible support to those who fought for India's independence and democracy.
