Manipur: Army Post Attacked in Bishnupur, Security Forces Respond
Suspected Kuki militants opened fire at an Indian Army post in Bishnupur district, Manipur, late Wednesday night, triggering a significant security response. The incident occurred in a periphery village bordering Churachandpur district, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.
Exchange of Fire Lasts 30 Minutes
According to Manipur Police, the attack took place at 11:40 PM on Wednesday in Phougakchao Awang Leikai. The militants directed their fire towards the Army post, prompting immediate retaliation from security forces.
The Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (58th Battalion), deployed in the area, responded swiftly by returning fire towards the source. This exchange lasted approximately 30 minutes, though fortunately, no casualties were reported from the confrontation.
Joint Search Operation Launched
In response to the attack, security forces have launched a comprehensive joint search operation in the adjoining hill ranges. This operation involves multiple agencies, including the Army, CRPF, Manipur Police, and India Reserve Battalion (IRB).
Officials have confirmed that surveillance has been intensified across the region. Troops have been strategically deployed to prevent any escalation of violence and maintain stability.
Appeal for Calm Amid Tensions
Authorities have urged civilians to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours that could exacerbate the situation. The incident follows recent unrest in Churachandpur, where a separate event sparked public outrage.
Earlier, a mine-protected Army vehicle collided with a two-wheeler in Churachandpur, injuring two riders. Both individuals were evacuated and discharged after receiving medical treatment. However, the incident led to mob violence, with property vandalized and a security vehicle torched at Tuibong.
In connection with this violence, police have detained 30 people. The combination of these events underscores the fragile security environment in Manipur, with security forces on high alert to prevent further incidents.
