Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Urges Water Conservation Amid Bleak Monsoon Forecast
State agriculture minister Dattatray Bharane has issued a crucial advisory to farmers, urging them to use available water stocks judiciously. This recommendation comes in response to a report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which predicts a bleak monsoon situation persisting until August this year.
Minister's Statement on Monsoon and Water Management
Bharane addressed reporters in Karad, Satara, on Sunday while en route to Kolhapur for an event at the Government Agriculture College. He emphasized the IMD's forecast of a strong El Nino effect, which is expected to lead to a dry monsoon across the Indian subcontinent.
The minister stated, "The IMD has predicted less rainfall until August. This summer is already hot and may intensify after April 18. There is an urgent need to utilize the available water stock carefully. Farmers are advised to take extra care of their crops during this period."
Impact of Gulf Conflicts on Agriculture
Bharane also highlighted potential broader impacts on the agriculture sector, noting that while current foodgrain availability is sufficient, an extended war in the Gulf region could further strain resources. He explained, "If the war in the Gulf gets extended, it will significantly impact the agriculture sector. Currently, the export of agricultural produce has halted, leading to either decreased or stabilized domestic prices."

Compensation for Hailstorm Damages

"Once we receive the assessment reports, farmers will be compensated immediately," he said. The state government has issued a resolution to fix compensation for hailstorm damages, removing previous limits. This means all affected farmers, regardless of land holding size or number of cattle lost, will be eligible for compensation.
