Maharashtra Government Takes Proactive Steps to Secure LPG Supply Amid Geopolitical Tensions
In response to the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, the Maharashtra government has implemented a series of strategic measures to guarantee uninterrupted supply of domestic and commercial gas cylinders across the state. This initiative aims to prevent any potential disruptions in LPG availability and ensure smooth coordination during this period of international uncertainty.
Formation of District-Level Monitoring Committees
The state government has decided to establish special committees at the district level to oversee LPG distribution and address any emerging shortages. These committees will be led by key officials including the district collector, superintendent of police, district supply officer, and representatives from all government gas companies. Their primary responsibilities will involve:
- Monitoring the entire LPG supply chain from production to distribution
- Maintaining law and order at gas agencies and during transportation
- Submitting daily reports on stock status and distribution challenges
In the Mumbai-Thane rationing area, a separate committee will operate under the controller of rationing, incorporating the deputy commissioner of police and deputy controller (rationing). The joint commissioner of police (administration) will coordinate with all deputy commissioners in Mumbai and Thane to ensure seamless operations.
Priority Allocation for Essential Services
The government has implemented a priority system for LPG distribution, with institutions providing essential services receiving preferential treatment. This includes:
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Government hostels and mess facilities in educational institutions
- Mid-day meal schemes in government schools
- Government-run ashram schools
- Community kitchens and other critical public services
A comprehensive list of such institutions will be issued, and a separate priority order will be strictly enforced to ensure these facilities receive uninterrupted gas supply.
Enhanced Production and Stock Management
To meet Maharashtra's daily LPG demand of approximately 9,000 metric tonnes, authorities have increased production at refineries from 9,000 metric tonnes to about 11,000 metric tonnes per day over the past two days. Additional Chief Secretary of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department, Anil Diggikar, has directed all concerned agencies to maintain smooth LPG supply and ensure proper monitoring of distribution across the state.
The department has assured citizens that there is no shortage of domestic LPG in Maharashtra, with sufficient production and stock available to meet current demand. For commercial LPG, priority allocation is being implemented according to Central Government guidelines.
Communication Strategy and Alternative Fuel Options
To prevent panic and misinformation regarding gas supply, the government has established a comprehensive communication plan. Daily updates will be disseminated through radio, FM channels, television, and print media, coordinated by the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations along with district committees. Authorities will also take strict action against fake or misleading information circulated on social media platforms.
District-level committees will explore alternative fuel options such as coal or kerosene, while strictly adhering to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board norms. Meetings with hotel and restaurant associations will be conducted to encourage the adoption of alternative fuels where feasible.
Infrastructure and Support Systems
The government has mandated several support mechanisms to ensure efficient LPG distribution:
- Control rooms will be established at state, divisional, district, and taluka levels
- A WhatsApp facility will be made available for grievance redressal
- Oil companies have been directed to resolve technical issues with gas booking apps and missed-call services immediately
- Police authorities will provide necessary protection to LPG transport vehicles and gas agencies
- Local representatives and Gram Panchayat members will assist in preventing panic among citizens
Industry Concerns and Additional Fuel Security
Industry Minister Uday Samant has addressed concerns regarding export finance and alternative fuel arrangements faced by industries amid the ongoing West Asia crisis. The state government will take up these issues with the Central Government to ensure industrial operations remain unaffected.
The government has also confirmed adequate stock of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for domestic use, along with sufficient reserves of petrol and diesel. Refineries in Maharashtra are operating at full capacity, producing approximately 15,000 kilolitres of petrol and 38,000 kilolitres of diesel per day to meet market demand.
With these comprehensive measures in place, the Maharashtra government aims to maintain fuel security and prevent any supply chain disruptions during this period of geopolitical tension. Citizens have been urged not to panic, as adequate arrangements have been made to meet all fuel requirements across the state.
