Kerala Chief Minister Justifies Sharp Response to Party Worker at Public Event

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala on Tuesday defended his sharp remark towards a Communist Party of India (Marxist) worker who attempted to ask a question during a public event, emphasizing that such responses are inevitable when common decencies are not maintained.

Incident at Konni Election Convention

The incident occurred on Monday night in Konni, where Vijayan was speaking after inaugurating the election convention meeting for LDF candidate K U Janeesh Kumar. Das P George, a native of Attachakkal in Konni and a daily wage worker, was among the audience seated near the stage. When George expressed his desire to ask a question, an agitated Vijayan retorted sharply, telling him to "go home and ask." The video of this exchange quickly went viral, sparking widespread debate and criticism over the chief minister's reaction.

CM's Justification on Public Event Protocols

When questioned by reporters in Idukki on Tuesday, Vijayan clarified his stance, stating that public events have specific protocols that differ from press conferences. "A public event is different from a press conference, and you cannot ask questions in the middle of it. That is not permitted in public events," he explained. He added that party workers sometimes get overly excited, but maintaining decorum is crucial. "There were certain common decencies to be maintained at public events, and if they aren't followed, it would invite such responses," Vijayan asserted.

Worker Apologizes for Disruption

Meanwhile, Das P George expressed regret for his actions on Tuesday, acknowledging his mistake. "What I did was wrong. I shouldn't have interrupted the chief minister's speech," he told reporters. George, who was not hurt by the CM's reaction, explained that he intended to ask how the government would carry out development activities after potentially securing a third term, given that the central government had blocked funds meant for the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

Political Reactions and Criticism

The incident drew criticism from political opponents, with AICC general secretary K C Venugopal commenting that the chief minister had lost his composure. Speaking to reporters in Alappuzha on Tuesday, Venugopal said, "The question posed to the chief minister at the convention was typical of a party worker. People often ask questions they wish to political leaders. We don't suggest they go home and ask." He implied that Vijayan's remarks reflected a realization of impending defeat, adding fuel to the ongoing political discourse in Kerala.

This episode highlights the tensions and protocols surrounding public engagements in the political landscape, as leaders balance accessibility with maintaining order during events.
