Passengers Stage Rail Roko Protest at Kulithalai Station Over Persistent Train Delays
Tension gripped the Kulithalai railway station in Karur district on Friday as frustrated passengers took drastic action, blocking a train to protest against what they described as chronic and unacceptable delays in passenger train services. The demonstration highlighted a growing crisis for daily commuters who rely on these vital rail links.
Three Months of Systematic Delays Spark Outrage
Protesters articulated that two key passenger trains—the service operating from Salem to Trichy and its counterpart from Trichy to Erode—have been arriving at Kulithalai station nearly an hour behind schedule consistently for the past three months. Both trains are officially scheduled to arrive at 8:10 AM, but have repeatedly failed to meet this timing, causing widespread disruption.
The impact has been severe and far-reaching, affecting more than 2,000 daily passengers. This diverse group includes textile workers commuting to Karur, government employees, and students, many of whom have been forced to report late to their workplaces and educational institutions. The cumulative effect of these delays has eroded trust in the railway system and imposed significant personal and professional costs on the commuter community.
Frustration Boils Over into Direct Action
Passengers expressed deep frustration, stating that repeated complaints to railway authorities had yielded no tangible results or improvements. Many alleged that the delays were a direct consequence of the prioritization of premium train services over regular passenger trains, a practice they claim neglects the needs of ordinary commuters.
This pent-up anger culminated in a dramatic protest on Friday. When the Salem–Trichy passenger train arrived, commuters took matters into their own hands, stopping the train and initiating a sit-in protest directly on the railway tracks. This act of civil disobedience brought train services to a halt, underscoring the urgency of their demands.
Authorities Intervene with Assurances
Railway police personnel and Kulithalai DSP Senthilkumar swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Following discussions with the protesters, the authorities provided assurances that corrective measures would be implemented to address the delay issues. Satisfied with these promises, the protesters subsequently withdrew their demonstration, allowing train services to resume normal operations.
