Kurukshetra Deputy Commissioner Stresses Importance of Aapda Mitras in Disaster Situations

In Kurukshetra, Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena has highlighted the indispensable role of Aapda Mitras as first responders during times of disaster. His remarks came during the inauguration of a seven-day training camp organized by the District Disaster Management Authority under the Yuva Aapda Mitra scheme, which commenced on March 21, 2026.

Training and Preparedness for Disaster Response

Nearly 400 volunteers are currently undergoing intensive training in Kurukshetra, with experts focusing on imparting practical skills essential for effective disaster management. The District Revenue Department has ensured comprehensive arrangements, including training facilities, accommodation, and refreshments, to support the trainees throughout the camp.

Deputy Commissioner Meena shared insights from last year's floods caused by heavy rainfall and the overflowing Markanda river in Shahabad and Pehowa. He emphasized that during such calamities, Aapda Mitras are often the first to reach out and provide crucial assistance to the public, underscoring their critical role in community resilience.

Key Training Areas for Volunteers

Additional Deputy Commissioner Vivek Arya outlined the four core areas in which volunteers will be trained during the seven-day camp:

  • Legal and administrative protocols related to disaster management.
  • Personal preparedness measures to ensure safety during disasters.
  • Techniques for providing immediate assistance in disaster situations.
  • Supporting rehabilitation and resettlement efforts for affected individuals post-disaster.

District Revenue Officer Chetna Chaudhary confirmed that the training is being conducted under the central government's Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme for the 2025-26 period. This initiative aims to build a robust network of trained volunteers capable of responding swiftly and effectively to emergencies, thereby enhancing the district's overall disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
