Kanpur Gripped by LPG Cylinder Shortage Chaos Ahead of Eid Celebrations
Chaotic scenes unfolded outside multiple gas agencies in Kanpur as large crowds queued up for LPG cylinders, creating significant disruptions ahead of the approaching Eid festival. The situation escalated with people arriving as early as 5 AM, leading to long lines and frustration among consumers.
Early Morning Queues and Distribution Challenges
At the Indian Gas Agency near Pandu Nagar, LPG cylinder distribution was conducted under strict police supervision to manage the overwhelming crowds. Despite this, many individuals who had been waiting since 6 AM were forced to return empty-handed as stocks depleted before their turn arrived.
A consumer expressed his frustration, stating, "We were in the queue since 6 AM. Eid is approaching, and today is also Juma (Friday), yet we are stuck waiting for LPG. The administration must improve arrangements to ensure everyone can get cylinders before the festival."
Another woman in the queue highlighted the logistical issues, saying, "We have been waiting since 5 AM, and distribution is being handled from just one vehicle. It would be better if more vehicles were added so that everyone can receive LPG cylinders in a timely manner."
Widespread Shortages Across the City
Similar scenes were reported at the Bharat Gas agency in Kalyanpur, where people lined up from the early morning hours. Many mentioned that by the time their turn came, the cylinders had already run out, forcing them to return home only to queue up again the following day.
Outside another gas agency at Sarsaul in Narwal, operator Umesh provided insights into the supply chain breakdown. He explained that on Thursday, 350 cylinders were delivered and distributed, but on Friday, the delivery vehicle failed to arrive. Senior officials, upon being informed, assured that cylinders would be sent by Friday evening or Saturday morning.
By Thursday evening, the agency had already registered 600 consumer bookings, indicating a severe mismatch between demand and supply. This backlog exacerbated the chaos, leaving many residents anxious about securing essential cooking fuel ahead of the festive period.
Administrative Response and Future Implications
The administration faces mounting pressure to address the LPG cylinder shortage promptly. With Eid festivities drawing near, the need for efficient distribution and increased supply has become critical to prevent further disruptions and ensure that all households have access to necessary resources.
This incident underscores broader issues in supply chain management and highlights the urgent need for improved logistical planning during peak demand periods. As consumers continue to voice their concerns, authorities are expected to implement measures to alleviate the crisis and restore normalcy in LPG cylinder distribution across Kanpur.
