Kamal Haasan's MNM Withdraws from Direct Contest, Pledges Support to DMK Alliance in Tamil Nadu
In a significant political development in Chennai, veteran actor and politician Kamal Haasan declared on Tuesday that his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), will abstain from direct participation in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Instead, the party will extend its full support to the DMK-led alliance and actively campaign for its candidates across the state.
A Decision Framed as Duty, Not Sacrifice
Kamal Haasan emphasized that this strategic move should be viewed as a duty rather than a sacrifice. "This is not sacrifice, but duty," he stated, clarifying his party's stance on campaigning for the DMK front despite MNM's decision not to field its own candidates. The announcement was made during a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, where Kamal formally communicated the decision.
Prior to this meeting, Kamal issued a detailed statement explaining the rationale behind MNM's withdrawal from direct electoral contest. He revealed that the number of seats offered by the DMK and their request for MNM to contest under the DMK's 'rising sun' symbol were unacceptable to his party. "We have been associated with the 'torch light' symbol for nine years. It is not just a symbol but our identity. I cannot and will not ignore the sentiments of my party cadres who have been associated with me for nine years," Kamal asserted, highlighting the emotional and symbolic importance of the party emblem.
