JMM Intensifies Assam Election Campaign with Jharkhand Leadership
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), as part of its strategic expansion into northeastern India, is set to significantly intensify its campaigning efforts for the Assam assembly elections starting this Saturday. The party, which currently governs Jharkhand in alliance with the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has deployed its top leadership to bolster its presence in the crucial state polls.
Star Campaigners and Leadership Deployment
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife, Gandey MLA Kalpana Soren, have been designated as the party's primary star campaigners for the Assam electoral battle. Multiple JMM members from Jharkhand, including several MLAs, MPs, and ministers, have already begun arriving in Assam to support the campaign infrastructure.
On Friday, Transport Minister and Chaibasa MLA Deepak Birua reached Dibrugarh, while his counterpart Chamra Linda, the Bishunpur legislator, has been actively camping with party workers for over a week. Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji arrived in Dibrugarh on Thursday night, confirming to media that while party workers are gradually reaching Assam based on leadership mandates, formal intensive campaigning will commence from Friday.
Campaign Schedule and Strategic Focus
Party sources indicate that Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Kalpana Soren are scheduled to hold multiple rallies near Guwahati on Saturday, though the party has not officially announced their detailed itinerary. "Yes, the CM will begin campaigning from Friday and will hold multiple rallies, but the party will officially notify the schedule soon," revealed a confidential source within the JMM leadership.
The party's electoral strategy specifically targets seats in upper Assam, a region characterized by extensive tea estates where significant tribal populations reside and work. This demographic focus aligns with JMM's traditional support base and political messaging. Before the formal announcement of polls, Hemant Soren had already addressed two rallies in Assam, signaling the party's serious intention to contest seats in the state.
Candidate Nominations and Alliance Dynamics
Originally, JMM had named candidates for 21 out of 126 constituencies in Assam. However, following the scrutiny process, the party will now contest only 18 seats as the nominations of three candidates were rejected due to technical errors in their nomination forms. A party source explained, "It's unfortunate but all JMM nominations were filed on the last day due to delay in seat-sharing talks. As a result, three candidates made some mistakes in their nomination forms leading to their rejection during the scrutiny."
This development occurred after JMM changed its electoral stance following unsuccessful seat-sharing negotiations with its alliance partner Congress. The party proceeded independently to declare candidates for multiple constituencies, demonstrating its commitment to establishing a foothold in Assam's political landscape ahead of the April 9 polls.
The intensified campaign represents a significant step in JMM's northeast expansion plans, leveraging its Jharkhand leadership's popularity and organizational strength to make inroads in Assam's competitive electoral arena.
