Goa Council Seeks Land Lease for Shivaji Statue Post-Court Order

Mormugao Municipal Council Proposes Land Lease to Preserve Shivaji Statue

In a significant development in Vasco, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) held a special meeting on Friday and resolved to formally request the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) to lease a portion of its land at the Headland-Sada junction. This land is currently the site of an illegally erected statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, sparking legal and administrative actions.

Court Order and Postponed Removal Action

The Bombay High Court recently issued an order mandating the removal of the statue, which stands on encroached MPA land. Initially, the collector had scheduled the statue's removal for Thursday, but the action was postponed. Officials cited a shortage of armed police forces as the primary reason for the delay, highlighting the tense situation in the area.

Proposal to Avoid Conflicts and Ensure Compliance

An MMC official explained that the council aims to request the MPA to grant the land on lease, drawing a parallel to how the MPA has previously leased land to the Murgaon Cha Raja Trust for its annual Ganeshotsav festivities, located near the illegal statue. This decision emerged after several councillors petitioned chairperson Girish Borkar to advance the proposal to the MPA.

Borkar emphasized that to prevent potential conflicts and address community concerns, the MMC will formally submit the proposal to the MPA. He noted, "The area has been tense since the order for removal of the Shivaji statue was issued," underscoring the need for a diplomatic resolution.

Background and Implications

The statue's illegal erection has led to a complex legal battle, with the High Court's order putting pressure on local authorities to act. By seeking a lease agreement, the MMC hopes to regularize the statue's presence, potentially avoiding further disputes and ensuring compliance with court directives. This move reflects ongoing efforts to balance cultural sentiments with legal requirements in Goa.
