Assam Congress Chief Gaurav Gogoi Discloses Rs 7.57 Crore in Assets for Assembly Polls
Guwahati: In a significant financial disclosure, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has submitted his nomination affidavit for the upcoming assembly elections, declaring total assets worth Rs 7.57 crore for himself and his wife, Elizabeth Clare Gogoi. This marks a notable increase from the Rs 4.66 crore declared in 2024, reflecting a rise in the couple's wealth as Gogoi contests his first assembly election.
Wealth Distribution and Key Holdings
The affidavit reveals that Elizabeth Clare Gogoi accounts for the larger share of the couple's wealth. The 43-year-old Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat declared investments in bonds, shares, and mutual funds worth Rs 11.47 lakh, while his wife's investments stand at a substantial Rs 47.12 lakh. In terms of postal and insurance instruments, Gogoi holds Rs 32.68 lakh, whereas his wife possesses Rs 1.04 crore under this category, along with EPF savings of Rs 57.25 lakh and a UK pension plan valued at Rs 13.24 lakh.
Elizabeth Gogoi also owns significant precious assets, including 331 grams of gold worth Rs 46.12 lakh, silver valued at Rs 11.36 lakh, and diamond jewellery appraised at Rs 3.65 lakh. Immovable Properties and Financial Liabilities
In the realm of immovable property, Gaurav Gogoi holds a one-third share in two properties located in Guwahati. These include a three-storey residential building valued at Rs 95 lakh and an inherited flat in Delhi's Vasant Kunj, which is worth Rs 1.54 crore. Despite these assets, the affidavit notes an outstanding car loan of Rs 5.96 lakh in Gogoi's name, indicating a mix of holdings and liabilities.
Legal and Political Context
The nomination document also mentions a pending case against Gaurav Gogoi at the Basishta police station in Guwahati. This case relates to allegations of obstructing government servants during the Congress's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in January 2024, adding a layer of legal scrutiny to his electoral bid. As the Assam assembly polls approach, this asset declaration provides voters with a transparent view of the candidate's financial standing, amidst ongoing political and legal developments.
