DMK Unveils Election Manifesto with Major Welfare Promises
In a significant political move ahead of the elections, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) released its comprehensive poll manifesto on Sunday. The document, presented by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the party headquarters in Chennai, outlines an ambitious vision for Tamil Nadu's development over the next five years, featuring 515 distinct promises.
Enhanced Support for Women and Households
The manifesto prominently includes a pledge to double the monthly financial assistance for women under the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam scheme from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. This enhancement aims to provide greater economic security and empowerment for women across the state.
Additionally, the DMK has introduced the 'Illatharasi' scheme, which offers a substantial benefit to households not subject to income tax. Under this initiative, eligible families will receive a coupon worth Rs 8,000. This coupon can be utilized to purchase new household appliances or exchange existing items, including washing machines, televisions, refrigerators, mixies, microwave ovens, and induction stoves. This measure is seen as a direct counter to the AIADMK's promise of free refrigerators, highlighting the competitive nature of welfare politics in Tamil Nadu.
Agricultural and Fishermen Welfare
Building on the legacy of his father, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who initiated free electricity for farmers, Stalin announced a new commitment: free modern electric pumpsets without meters for more than 20 lakh farmers. This initiative is designed to boost agricultural productivity and reduce operational costs for the farming community.
For fishermen, the manifesto promises an increase in monthly assistance during the fishing ban period, raising the amount from Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000. This adjustment seeks to mitigate the financial hardships faced by fishermen when they are unable to engage in their primary livelihood.
Economic Growth and Job Creation Targets
The DMK has set forth ambitious economic goals, aiming to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) totaling Rs 18 lakh crore over the next five years. Stalin emphasized that this influx of investment is expected to generate an additional 50 lakh jobs, significantly boosting employment opportunities in the state.
In terms of trade, the party targets a dramatic increase in exports, aiming to reach $120 billion from the current $52 billion in 2024-25. Specifically, exports in the information technology sector are projected to double from Rs 2.5 lakh crore to Rs 5 lakh crore within the same timeframe.
Education and Technological Advancements
The manifesto also addresses educational reforms, with plans to extend the free breakfast scheme up to Class VIII, ensuring better nutrition for school children. In a notable shift, the DMK has dropped its earlier promise of seeking exemption from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) but has stated it will pursue exemptions from all entrance examinations conducted by the Union government.
Emphasizing technological progress, the document highlights a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) in Tamil development. This includes initiatives to develop large language models and implement Tamil AI fellowships, positioning the state at the forefront of AI innovation and linguistic preservation.
Stalin's Vision for the Manifesto
During the release event, Stalin described the manifesto as the 'superstar' of the election, calling it the 'hero and heroine' that embodies the party's commitment to the people. He outlined that the manifesto seeks to balance a larger development agenda with social engineering, combining welfare measures with a strategic vision for growth across various sectors.
The DMK's promises appear to expand upon existing government programs while introducing new initiatives, reflecting a comprehensive approach to governance and public welfare as the election season intensifies.
