DMK Finalizes Seat-Sharing with KMDK for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
DMK-KMDK Seat Deal: 2 Constituencies for Upcoming Polls

DMK and KMDK Seal Seat-Sharing Pact for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has finalized its seat-sharing arrangement with the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The agreement, signed on Friday at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, allocates two constituencies to KMDK, with the party contesting both seats on DMK's iconic 'rising sun' symbol.

Key Details of the Agreement

The pact was formalized by DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and KMDK general secretary E R Eswaran. This marks a continuation of their alliance, though with a reduced seat count compared to previous elections. In the 2021 assembly polls, KMDK was allotted three constituencies under the DMK-led alliance, contesting all on the 'rising sun' symbol, with Eswaran emerging victorious in Tiruchengode.

Eswaran explained the reduction in seats, stating, "Considering the interest of the alliance and the need to win the election, we agreed to contest two seats on the 'rising sun' symbol." He attributed this adjustment to the necessity of accommodating more parties within the DMK's expanding coalition framework.

Political Context and Criticisms

Following the signing, Eswaran took the opportunity to criticize the opposition, particularly targeting the AIADMK leadership within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He highlighted that neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor other alliance leaders have publicly praised the government led by Edappadi K Palaniswami. "Modi praises governments of the late M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, but he did not say a word about the Edappadi government," Eswaran remarked, underscoring perceived neglect within the NDA.

Broader Alliance Dynamics

This agreement is part of DMK's broader seat-sharing strategy for the upcoming elections. The party has already allocated 28 constituencies to the Congress, four to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), and two each to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK). These moves reflect DMK's efforts to consolidate a strong, multi-party alliance to secure electoral success.

The collaboration with KMDK, despite the reduced seat allocation, signifies ongoing political cooperation aimed at maximizing vote share in key regions. As election preparations intensify, such alliances are crucial for shaping the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, with parties strategically positioning themselves to address voter concerns and campaign effectively.
