CPM Leaders Condemn G Sudhakaran's Independent Candidacy as Party Betrayal
In a sharp escalation of political tensions within Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders have launched a scathing attack on former minister G Sudhakaran, accusing him of betraying the party by announcing his independent candidacy for the Ambalappuzha constituency. Culture Minister Saji Cherian led the charge, asserting that Sudhakaran has no moral authority to criticize the party and that his decision to contest independently will have no significant impact on the electoral landscape.
"Party Has Not Betrayed Anyone": Cherian's Firm Stance
Culture Minister Saji Cherian minced no words in his response to Sudhakaran's move, stating unequivocally that "CPM has not betrayed Sudhakaran in any way. He has no right to say anything against the party." Cherian emphasized that regardless of whether someone has served the party for 63 years or just six days, if they no longer align with communist principles, they should step aside. "If they don't need communist party, they should stop working and go home," he declared, adding that internal party discussions were the appropriate forum for airing grievances rather than public statements.
Cherian further revealed that the party would formally respond to Sudhakaran's criticisms of the leadership. "If he wishes to contest, let him contest," Cherian stated dismissively, while challenging Sudhakaran to clarify his accusations about "political criminals" within the party. Quoting veteran leader V S Achuthanandan, Cherian affirmed that "the party will continue straight without any deviation. There won't be any decline," signaling the CPM's resilience in the face of internal dissent.
Ambalappuzha MLA H Salam Accuses Sudhakaran of Electoral Obsession
Ambalappuzha MLA H Salam joined the chorus of condemnation, accusing Sudhakaran of displaying an "obsession for electoral politics" that has clouded his judgment. Salam pointed out that Sudhakaran had received "special consideration from the party that no one else did," making his decision to leave particularly egregious. He noted that even legendary leader V S Achuthanandan had never reacted in such a manner to party decisions, underscoring the importance of retaining experienced members like Sudhakaran for the CPM's stability.
Salam speculated that Sudhakaran's independent candidacy announcement was strategically timed to anticipate support from the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF). "He announced his independent candidacy anticipating UDF support," Salam alleged, while confidently predicting that "no one will leave the party with him." The MLA vowed that the party would vigorously oppose Sudhakaran's stance and proactively communicate its policies to the public to counter any misinformation.
In a personal reflection, Salam recalled that "Sudhakaran himself taught how to deal with such matters and the same approach will be used here," suggesting that the party would apply its established disciplinary mechanisms. He also addressed past incidents, mentioning that the party had taken action against individuals who insulted Sudhakaran's father and that he was the first to visit Sudhakaran in the hospital following an injury, though scheduling conflicts prevented a later visit with district committee members.
CPM District Secretary Reveals Early Recognition of Sudhakaran's "Disease"
CPM Alappuzha district secretary R Nazar provided a revealing insight into the party's internal assessment, stating that they had identified Sudhakaran's "disease" much earlier through various interactions. Nazar told reporters that they had explicitly informed Sudhakaran that his approach was wrong, indicating that his current actions were not entirely unexpected.
Nazar expressed deep disappointment that Sudhakaran is now preparing to contest in Ambalappuzha under the pretext of being insulted by the party. "Such a downfall should not happen to a communist leader. It pains us," he lamented, highlighting the emotional toll of the rift. More strategically, Nazar warned that "Sudhakaran's stance weakens both CPM and LDF and benefits BJP and UDF," framing the independent candidacy as a threat to the broader left coalition in Kerala.
The district secretary clarified that the party had been willing to address any concerns Sudhakaran raised internally, but his public defiance left no room for reconciliation. He confirmed that "H. Salam will be the candidate for the Ambalappuzha constituency, as decided by the party," solidifying the CPM's official stance. The press conference, attended by district committee members A M Ariff, V G Mohanan, and K G Rajeshwari, underscored the party's unified front against Sudhakaran's rebellion.
Broader Implications for Kerala's Political Landscape
The public fallout between G Sudhakaran and the CPM leadership marks a significant development in Kerala's political dynamics, particularly as the state gears up for crucial electoral battles. Sudhakaran's decision to contest independently in Ambalappuzha not only challenges the CPM's authority but also risks fragmenting the LDF's vote share, potentially creating opportunities for the BJP and UDF to gain ground in a traditionally left-leaning constituency.
The CPM's aggressive response, characterized by accusations of betrayal and electoral obsession, reflects its determination to maintain discipline and cohesion within its ranks. By rallying around official candidate H Salam and dismissing Sudhakaran's candidacy as inconsequential, the party aims to project strength and unity to both its supporters and political adversaries.
As the situation unfolds, the key questions remain: Will Sudhakaran's independent bid attract substantial support, or will the CPM's organizational machinery prevail? How will this internal conflict impact the LDF's broader electoral strategy in Kerala? One thing is clear—the Ambalappuzha constituency has become a flashpoint in the ongoing struggle for political dominance in the state, with ramifications that could extend far beyond its borders.
