Congress MLA's Meeting With JD(U) Minister Ignites Political Speculation in Bihar

In a development that has stirred the political waters of Bihar, Congress MLA from Valmiki Nagar, Surendra Kushwaha, met with Rural Works Department Minister Ashok Choudhary of the JD(U) on Sunday. The meeting took place at the minister's official residence in Patna, coming at a time when Kushwaha is already under scrutiny for abstaining from the recent Rajya Sabha elections for five seats from the state.

Background of Abstention and Political Fluid Situation

Kushwaha, along with two other Congress MLAs—Manoj Biswas from Forbesganj and Manohar Prasad Singh from Manihari—and Faisal Rehman from the RJD, had abstained from voting in the Rajya Sabha election held on March 16. This move resulted in a significant setback for the grand alliance, as their candidate and sitting RJD Rajya Sabha member, Amarendra Dhari Singh, lost the fifth seat. The remaining four seats were secured by the NDA, including JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar and BJP national president Nitin Nabin.

In response to this, the state Congress issued show-cause notices to its three MLAs two days later, demanding explanations for their conduct within a two-day timeframe. As of now, none of the MLAs have submitted their replies, according to state Congress spokesman Rajesh Rathorre.

Kushwaha's Defense and Minister's History

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Kushwaha stated, "I called on Choudhary in connection with pursuing the developmental works in my assembly constituency. In fact, when I visited the minister, my car carried the flag of Congress to which I belong." He further added, "Calling CM Nitish Kumar a 'good man', he being the CM for all the people of the state, I would not mind meeting him in connection with the works in my constituency to fulfill the promises I made. I know nothing about what is happening in the Bihar NDA, nor do I have any interest in knowing about it."

Interestingly, Ashok Choudhary, who Kushwaha met, has a notable political history. In March 2018, Choudhary, then the state Congress president, joined the JD(U) along with three other party MLCs, delivering an immediate shock to the state Congress. This historical context adds layers to the current meeting, fueling speculation about potential political realignments.

Congress Party's Stance and Disciplinary Actions

Rajesh Rathorre, the state Congress spokesman, clarified the party's position, saying, "The party has no issue with any of its MLAs calling on any minister in connection with their work in the constituency. However, the three MLAs have been served show-cause notices, to which none has given any reply. Therefore, Surendra Kushwaha's meeting with the minister causes suspicion."

He emphasized that if the replies from the MLAs are found unsatisfactory, the party's disciplinary committee will take appropriate action against them. This situation highlights the internal tensions within the Congress party in Bihar, as it navigates a fluid political landscape.

Broader Implications for Bihar Politics

The meeting between Kushwaha and Choudhary occurs amid a period of political uncertainty in Bihar, with the NDA holding sway and the opposition grappling with cohesion issues. Kushwaha's abstention and subsequent actions could signal deeper rifts within the Congress or potential shifts in allegiance, reminiscent of Choudhary's own defection in 2018.

As the state Congress awaits responses to the show-cause notices, all eyes are on the disciplinary committee's next steps. The outcome may influence not only the fate of the involved MLAs but also the broader dynamics of Bihar's political alliances, particularly as parties position themselves ahead of future elections.

This incident underscores the volatile nature of state politics, where individual meetings can spark widespread speculation and impact party strategies. With Kushwaha maintaining his focus on constituency development, the political ramifications of his actions remain to be seen, potentially shaping the course of Bihar's political narrative in the coming months.
