Congress Workers in Jharkhand Demand Immediate Women's Reservation Law Implementation
Congress party workers in the cities of Ranchi and Dhanbad staged vigorous protests on Tuesday, calling for the prompt enforcement of the women's reservation law that was approved by Parliament in the year 2023. This demonstration unfolded as the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership engaged in a heated exchange of accusations regarding a recent amendment bill that failed to secure passage in the Lok Sabha.
Protests and Effigy Burning in Dhanbad
In a show of dissent, Congress activists set fire to effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Randhir Verma Chowk in Dhanbad, along with various other locations across the state. The protests highlighted growing frustration over the delayed implementation of the legislation aimed at increasing women's representation in political bodies.
Sita Rana, the president of the Dhanbad district women's Congress wing, voiced strong criticism against the central government. "The Union government is intentionally postponing the enforcement of the women's reservation law by citing the need for a census and delimitation exercise," she stated. "Despite receiving legislative approval, the government is evading the issue and instead engaging in political maneuvering over this critical matter."
Rana further emphasized that this delay is significantly hindering women from achieving their rightful involvement in governance and decision-making processes. The protestors issued a stern warning, indicating that their demonstrations would escalate in intensity if the government does not take swift action to address their demands.
BJP's Counter-Allegations and Planned Rally
On the opposing side, the BJP launched a counterattack, accusing the Congress party of deceiving the women of the nation. The BJP announced its intention to organize an Aakrosh rally in Ranchi on April 25, aimed at highlighting what they perceive as Congress's failures.
Aditya Sahu, the state BJP president, commented, "The Congress and its allies have been exposed by their actions in preventing the passage of The Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, which was designed to facilitate women's reservation during the recent parliamentary session." He added, "On April 25, our party workers will take to the streets to further reveal these truths to the public and hold the Congress accountable for their obstructionist tactics."
The political confrontation underscores the ongoing tensions between the two major parties over women's representation, with both sides leveraging the issue to gain political traction in Jharkhand. The situation remains volatile as both parties prepare for further actions and rallies in the coming days.
