Congress Intensifies Pressure on Modi Government Over LPG Shortage Crisis
In a significant escalation of political pressure, Maharashtra Congress president Harshawardhan Sapkal has issued a direct challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding immediate national address regarding the worsening LPG cylinder crisis gripping the state. The shortage has created a dual emergency, severely impacting both domestic households and commercial establishments across the region.
Public Agitation and Citizen Grievances
Addressing a convention of party workers from North Maharashtra in Trimbakeshwar on Friday, Sapkal led a visible agitation at a local gas distributorship. The protest saw direct interaction with citizens, particularly women, who had endured hours-long queues under harsh conditions merely to secure a single cooking gas cylinder.
"Common citizens are being forced to sit in scorching sunlight for hours just to obtain the basic fuel required to prepare meals at home," Sapkal declared. "The government has completely failed to ensure adequate supply while simultaneously implementing price hikes that have pushed cylinders to unaffordable levels for ordinary families."
During the demonstration, Congress functionaries prominently displayed placards and staged symbolic protests with gas cylinders to register their dissent against both state and central administrations. Women participants amplified their demands through slogans, calling for home-delivered domestic cylinders at a capped price of Rs 500 and criticizing the current Public Distribution System (PDS).
Broader Political Mobilization
After documenting citizen grievances, Sapkal assured residents that the Indian National Congress would significantly intensify its agitation campaign. "Our party stands firmly with impoverished citizens who are bearing the brunt of this crisis," he asserted. "We will not allow this pro-capitalist and pro-trader administration to succeed in its exploitative ambitions against the common people."
In a parallel development highlighting broader political discontent, functionaries of the Yuva Sena (Shiv Sena - UBT) staged a separate protest against rising inflation at their central office in Shalimar. The youth wing specifically denounced government policies, citing the dual impact of record-high LPG prices and acute commercial cylinder shortages that have crippled small businesses throughout urban centers.
Commercial Sector Collateral Damage
Sapkal emphasized that the crisis extends far beyond household kitchens, with the commercial cylinder shortage forcing numerous hotels and restaurants to suspend operations. This secondary impact threatens livelihoods across the hospitality sector and exposes systemic supply chain failures.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi maintains conspicuous silence while ordinary people suffer daily hardships," Sapkal charged. "He must finally face the public and provide concrete answers about when this crisis will be resolved and how the government plans to prevent future shortages."
The protests underscore growing political coordination against the ruling establishment, with opposition parties leveraging public frustration over essential commodity accessibility and affordability as a central rallying point ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
