BSP Corporator Emerges as Decisive Kingmaker in Nagpur Civic Election
In a significant political development in Nagpur, the lone Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) corporator in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) emerged as the crucial kingmaker during the Ashi Nagar zone sabhapati (mini mayor) election. This unexpected move dramatically tipped the scales in favor of the Congress party, altering what was widely anticipated to be a straightforward victory for the AIMIM-IUML alliance.
Congress Secures Victory with BSP Support
Congress corporator Asif Sheikh secured the Ashi Nagar zone sabhapati position after BSP's Harshala Jaiswal extended crucial last-minute support. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) sole corporator in the zone chose to remain neutral during the voting process. Ashi Nagar was the only zone among the ten to witness actual polling, with all other zones seeing largely unopposed outcomes.
The contest in Ashi Nagar turned particularly intense with Congress fielding Asif Sheikh against AIMIM candidate Alisha Faheem Khan. The alliance comprising AIMIM (with three corporators) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) (with four corporators operating under the Bahujan Muslim Vikas Sangh banner) was initially confident of clinching the post. They had actively reached out to Jaiswal to secure the majority mark in the 16-member panel.
Last-Minute Political Shift Alters Outcome
However, last-minute political developments completely changed the election's trajectory. BSP leader Sanjay Jaiswal revealed that internal rifts within the AIMIM camp over a nominated corporator post led to the withdrawal of their support. "On Friday morning, we decided to back Congress," Jaiswal stated, explaining the sudden shift in allegiance.
This political maneuver proved decisive, enabling Congress to edge past the alliance despite the tight arithmetic. The shift highlighted the volatile nature of local politics and how individual decisions can reshape expected outcomes in municipal governance.
BJP Secures Eight Zones with All-Women Candidates
In a parallel development, the BJP won sabhapati posts in eight zones unopposed, continuing its emphasis on women's representation in civic bodies. The party fielded exclusively women candidates across these zones, resulting in the following winners:
- Lakshmi Yadav (Laxmi Nagar)
- Dhanashree Deshpande (Dharampeth)
- Jyoti Deoghare (Hanuman Nagar)
- Bharti Bunde (Dhantoli)
- Seema Domne (Nehru Nagar)
- Uma Deshmukh (Gandhibagh)
- Abhiruchi Rajgirhe (Satranjipura)
- Mahsree Bisen (Lakadganj)
Congress registered an unopposed victory in the Mangalwari zone, backed by its clear majority of eleven corporators against BJP's five. Here, first-time corporator Seema Dawre became the zone sabhapati, marking another significant appointment in the civic body.
AIMIM-IUML Alliance Reacts to Narrow Defeat
AIMIM and Muslim League leaders Shakil Patel and Aslam Khan Mulla expressed strong disappointment over the outcome, alleging that Congress, with BSP's support, had sided with "oppressors" in the Ashi Nagar zone sabhapati election. They claimed AIMIM nominee Alisha Faheem Khan, wife of Mahal riots case accused Faheem Khan, lost by just one vote despite appeals for an uncontested poll.
The leaders argued that this defeat undermines the united fight of Muslim, Dalit, Adivasi, and other marginalized communities against the BJP, vowing to continue their political struggle despite this setback.
Additional Committee Elections and Tenure Details
In another parallel development, BJP corporator Rupali Thakur was elected chairperson of the Fire and Electricity Special Committee, with Lakhan Yerawar elected as deputy chairperson. District collector Kumar Ashirwad acted as the presiding officer for this election held at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation headquarters. The BJP secured both top posts without any major opposition challenge.
According to civic norms, the tenure of the committee chairperson, along with all zonal sabhapatis, will be for one year. This limited tenure often results in fast-tracked decision-making processes within the municipal corporation's administrative framework.
The election outcomes highlight the complex political dynamics at play in Nagpur's municipal governance, where strategic alliances and last-minute decisions can dramatically alter the balance of power in local civic administration.
