Telangana BJP Leader Raises Critical Questions on Musi River Rejuvenation Project
In a significant development, Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao has publicly challenged the state government's approach to the ambitious Musi river rejuvenation project. During a press conference held at the party's state office in Nampally, Hyderabad, on Saturday, Rao posed a series of pointed questions regarding the project's escalating costs and the adequacy of rehabilitation plans for affected residents.
Escalating Project Costs Under Scrutiny
Rao highlighted a concerning discrepancy in the financial estimates for reviving the Musi river. The government initially projected the cost at ₹5,000 crore, but Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy recently revised this figure to ₹7,000 crore. Rao expressed apprehension that the expenses could increase further once actual work commences, raising questions about fiscal management and transparency.
Demands for Comprehensive Rehabilitation Plans
While reiterating the BJP's support for cleaning and restoring the Musi, Rao emphasized that proper rehabilitation must be guaranteed for families living along the riverbank before any construction begins. He specifically questioned the government on the measures proposed to prevent drainage water from flowing into the Musi and whether a detailed project report had been prepared to address these critical issues.
Controversy Over Buffer Zone Implementation
Rao further criticized the proposed imposition of a 50-metre buffer zone along the river, arguing that such a move lacks justification and would disproportionately impact poor residents during the clean-up exercise. He stressed that any development initiative must balance environmental goals with social equity, ensuring that vulnerable communities are not unduly burdened.
Addressing Allegations of Artificial Gas Shortage
During the same press conference, Rao also addressed concerns about cooking gas availability, dismissing reports of a natural shortage as misleading. He claimed that the perceived scarcity is an 'artificial shortage' created by certain parties for political gain. In response to opposition criticism, Rao noted that while global gas prices have surged due to conflicts in the Middle East, prices have remained stable in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
He added that the central government has reduced gas prices from ₹1,200 to ₹900, providing significant relief to the public, and accused opposition parties of spreading fear for political reasons. This dual focus on both local infrastructure and national policy issues underscores the BJP's broader critique of governance and resource management in Telangana.
