Bengaluru Legislature Erupts in Heated Debate Over Jakkur Aerodrome Land Dispute
The Karnataka legislature witnessed a fiery exchange on Tuesday as opposition leader R Ashoka launched scathing allegations against the state government regarding the historic Jakkur aerodrome. The controversy centers on accusations that authorities are attempting to shut down the aviation facility and transfer its valuable 217-acre land parcel to real estate interests, triggering immediate and sharp rebuttals from government ministers.
Opposition Alleges Real Estate Grab of Historic Aviation Land
Participating in a debate about Bengaluru's deteriorating infrastructure, Ashoka made explosive claims that a "top bureaucrat" is actively facilitating a "big developer" from Rajasthan to transform the Jakkur aerodrome property into an exclusive sporting hub. He emphasized the historical significance of the land, originally gifted by the Mysore Maharaja specifically for aviation training purposes.
"The flying school was envisioned to train aspiring pilots from economically disadvantaged communities," Ashoka stated, recalling that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru himself laid its foundation stone. "There were earlier plans to convert it into an executive club, but the previous Bommai-led BJP government cancelled those proposals and reopened the flying school. Why has the current state government suddenly set its eyes on this land?"
Government Defends Position on Underutilized Aviation Facility
Energy Minister KJ George responded forcefully to the allegations, presenting a different perspective on the Jakkur aerodrome's current operations. He revealed that the flying school currently trains only 25 to 30 pilots annually, indicating limited activity at the facility.
"When I served as Bengaluru in-charge minister, a flyover was constructed near the location, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation refused to renew the operating licence, citing safety concerns during take-off and landing," George explained. "Consequently, I wrote to the chief minister suggesting the possibility of developing a sporting complex on the land. However, no final decision has been made on this proposal to date."
Political Tensions Escalate Over Land Use Priorities
Unconvinced by the government's explanation, Ashoka countered sharply: "Why would the government specifically want Jakkur land to build a sporting complex? If you genuinely wish to construct such a facility, you could acquire or purchase land elsewhere in Bengaluru." He further questioned why local MLA and Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda remained conspicuously silent on the contentious issue affecting his constituency.
The legislative confrontation highlights deeper tensions surrounding urban development priorities in India's technology capital, where prime land parcels have become increasingly scarce and valuable.
