West Bengal Government Announces Revised Vehicle Hire Rates for 2026 Assembly Elections
The West Bengal state government has officially revised the hiring charges for vehicles, vessels, and other logistical support required for the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. This revision introduces an average increase of 10% over the rates that were fixed during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, aiming to standardize payments across all districts and ensure transparency in election operations.
Standardized Rates Across Transport Categories
The new rate structure, which has been cleared by the finance department and takes immediate effect, covers a comprehensive range of transport categories. According to a notification issued by Transport Secretary Saumitra Mohan, the revised charges apply to buses, minibuses, small passenger vehicles, goods carriers, and river vessels. Additionally, fixed allowances for fuel consumption and crew meals have been established to streamline expenses.
Under the updated rates, buses will be hired at Rs 2,780 per day, excluding fuel costs, while minibuses will cost Rs 2,300 per day. For smaller transport options, small passenger vehicles with up to seven seats can be hired at Rs 980 per day, autos at Rs 550 per day, and e-rickshaws at Rs 850 per day, which includes charging costs. Goods vehicle charges vary based on capacity, ranging from Rs 980 for smaller units to Rs 2,240 for higher-capacity trucks.
Water Transport and Additional Allowances
Water transport services will see charges between Rs 3,100 and Rs 3,550 per day, depending on the passenger capacity of the vessels. For election observers, air-conditioned vehicles have been fixed at Rs 1,350 per day for cars and Rs 1,690 per day for larger vehicles. A uniform daily meal allowance of Rs 280 per person has been set for drivers, khalasis, and vessel crew members to cover their sustenance during election duty.
Objectives and Implementation Details
Government officials stated that this revision aims to reflect the rising operational costs in the transport sector while ensuring transparency and efficiency in election logistics. A senior official explained, "Standardized rates will help avoid disputes and ensure timely availability of vehicles during poll duty, which is crucial for the smooth conduct of elections." The new system also specifies that full-day charges will apply for duties exceeding eight hours, while half-day rates will be applicable for shorter durations.
This move is expected to facilitate better planning and resource allocation for the 2026 assembly elections, addressing potential logistical challenges and enhancing the overall election management process in West Bengal.
