BJP Leader Annamalai Alleges DMK's Vote-Buying Scam in Coimbatore Campaign
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK on Wednesday, accusing the party of attempting to buy votes through the distribution of Rs8,000 coupons. Campaigning for AIADMK candidates in Coimbatore, Annamalai termed this alleged practice a major electoral scam that undermines democratic principles.
Allegations of Voter Deception and Gift Distribution
While campaigning for Kinathukadavu AIADMK candidate S Damodaran at Vellalore and Singanallur AIADMK candidate K R Jayaram at Avarampalayam, Annamalai made serious allegations against DMK's Coimbatore South candidate V Senthilbalaji. He claimed that Senthilbalaji had established temporary sheds throughout the city specifically to house voters and distribute gifts as polling day approaches.
"With only a few days remaining before the election, DMK will desperately try to purchase votes through gifts and monetary incentives," Annamalai warned voters. He urged citizens not to be misled by what he described as deceptive tactics designed to steal votes through manipulation rather than earning them through legitimate governance promises.
Claims of DMK-Congress Rift and Drug Allegations
The BJP leader further asserted that the alliance between DMK and Congress was showing significant cracks. He pointed out that Congress leaders visiting Coimbatore were not actively campaigning for their own party candidates, suggesting deeper internal conflicts. Annamalai specifically mentioned that Rahul Gandhi was allegedly working to weaken DMK's position within the state rather than strengthening their alliance.
In one of his most serious allegations, Annamalai claimed the DMK government had transformed Tamil Nadu into what he called a "ganja capital" of India. He alleged that prominent figures within the ruling party were connected to international drug trafficking networks, contributing to what he described as a deteriorating law and order situation over the past five years.
Promises of Anti-Ganja Task Force and Development Focus
As part of his campaign promises, Annamalai declared that an Anti-Ganja Task Force would be established within 100 days if AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami assumes office as chief minister. This specialized unit would specifically target drug-related crimes that Annamalai claims have proliferated under DMK rule.
He also highlighted concerning crime statistics, noting that Tamil Nadu currently ranks alarmingly high in Pocso cases and crimes against women, which he attributed to the current administration's failure to maintain public safety.
Infrastructure Development and Local Issues
Shifting to development achievements, Annamalai pointed to the revival of Podanur railway station as evidence of BJP's commitment to infrastructure improvement in the region. He contrasted this with what he described as administrative failures in addressing local concerns.
Specifically addressing long-standing complaints from Vellalore residents about the local dump yard, Annamalai blamed the current administration for the daily dumping of approximately 1,500 tonnes of waste. He asserted that a permanent, sustainable solution to this environmental and public health issue would only be possible under an AIADMK-led government committed to effective governance.
Throughout his campaign speeches, Annamalai positioned the BJP-AIADMK alliance as the alternative capable of restoring law and order, combating corruption, and addressing both local and state-level concerns that he claims have been neglected under DMK rule.
