Major Road Accident in Ganjam Leaves 25 Injured
A severe head-on collision between a passenger mini-bus and a pickup van loaded with dry fish resulted in 25 people sustaining injuries on Sunday. The accident occurred at Jhatipitia, within the limits of the Digapahandi police station in Odisha's Ganjam district.
Rescue and Medical Response
Following the crash, local residents, firefighters, and police personnel swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. All the injured were initially admitted to Digapahandi hospital. Due to the seriousness of their injuries, seven individuals were referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur in critical condition. Hospital authorities have since reported that their condition is now stable.
The impact of the collision was devastating, causing severe damage to both vehicles. The mini-bus was carrying over 30 passengers and was en route to Chikiti when it collided with the oncoming pickup van.
Official Inquiry and Aftermath
State Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena visited the injured at the medical college. He announced that an inquiry would be conducted to determine the precise cause of the accident. Saravana Vivek M, the Superintendent of Police (Berhampur), also visited the accident site to oversee the investigation.
Police have seized both vehicles involved in the crash. In a concerning development, the mini-bus driver fled the scene after the accident. Meanwhile, the driver of the pickup van is currently undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained.
PK Patra, the inspector in-charge of Digapahandi police station, confirmed these details and stated that the investigation is ongoing to piece together the events leading to this tragic road mishap.
