Woman Succumbs to Injuries After Shooting in Police Custody in Saharanpur
A 25-year-old woman who was shot outside a community health centre in Saharanpur while in police custody has died from her injuries at AIIMS Rishikesh on Tuesday night. The incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about police security and caste-based violence in the region.
Brothers Intercept Police Vehicle and Open Fire
The woman had approached the police on Monday after being reported missing since March 16. She informed officers that she had left home willingly to live with a man from another caste. Police were transporting her for a mandatory medical examination when the attack occurred.
Saharanpur SSP Abhinandan Singh provided details of the assault. The police vehicle was intercepted by the woman's brothers, Monty Kumar and Ravi Singh, outside the health centre. "They approached the vehicle and, before officers could react, one of them fired at her. She sustained gunshot injuries, including one to the head," Singh stated.
The victim was initially taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but was later referred to AIIMS Rishikesh due to the severity of her injuries. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed during treatment on Tuesday night.
Brother Claims Responsibility in Disturbing Video
On Tuesday, Monty Kumar circulated a 37-second video claiming full responsibility for the shooting. In the chilling clip, he explained his motives, stating, "We had repeatedly warned her not to stay in contact with the man from another caste, but she did not listen. Despite several warnings from our family and parents, she continued, which we felt was bringing dishonour to us. I alone am responsible for shooting her; no one else is involved. I will surrender before the police."
Investigation Reveals Possible Motive
Investigators suspect the attack was strategically planned to prevent the woman from recording her official statement before a magistrate in support of her partner. Her family had previously accused the man of kidnapping, but as an adult, her voluntary statement could have nullified these allegations and potentially led to legal consequences for her family.
Police have confirmed that Monty Kumar, identified as a farmer, has been arrested following his video confession. Authorities are actively pursuing the second accused, Ravi Singh, who remains at large. A formal case of murder has been registered against both brothers.
