Wings for Life World Run Returns for 14th Edition to Fund Spinal Cord Research
After thirteen remarkable years as a community-driven, health-focused initiative, the Wings for Life World Run, organized by Red Bull, is back for its 14th edition. This global event continues to unite people worldwide to raise crucial funds for spinal cord injury research, building on its legacy of inclusivity and innovation.
Event Details and Registration
The run will be flagged off on Sunday, May 10 at 4:30 PM GMT. Participants across the globe can join via the dedicated Wings for Life World Run app, making it accessible to runners everywhere. In India, multiple cities will host gathering points, including:
- Nehru Park in New Delhi
- Kavuri Gate and Durgam Cheruvu in Hyderabad
- KJ Somaiya and Gargi Plaza in Mumbai
- Miramar Beach, Panjim, North Goa
- Sukhna Lake and Buddha Garden in Chandigarh
- Main Building, IISc in Bengaluru
- Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad
This inclusive run is open to everyone who wishes to support the cause. Interested participants can register online, with a registration fee of ₹1,300. Importantly, every cent of the entry fee goes directly to the Wings for Life foundation, which funds research aimed at finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.
The Unique Catcher Car Format
What sets this race apart is its innovative format: there is no fixed finish line. Instead, a Catcher Car—either physical or virtual—sets the challenge. Starting 30 minutes after the race begins, the Catcher Car gradually increases its speed, chasing runners from behind. Once the car overtakes a participant, their race ends. At major race locations, a physical Catcher Car is deployed, while remote participants are tracked virtually through the app.
Overseeing the event as International Sports Director is Colin Jackson, a two-time World Champion and Olympic silver medallist in the 110m Hurdles from 1988. His expertise adds a layer of athletic prestige to the cause-driven event.
Record-Breaking 2025 Edition
The 2025 edition was a landmark year, with a record-breaking 310,719 participants from 191 nationalities taking part simultaneously across 170 countries. Participants ran, walked, or rolled as part of this global movement, covering an average of 12.4 km each. This amounted to a total distance equivalent to nearly 64 times around the equator, showcasing the massive scale of participation.
In terms of fundraising, the event raised a single-year record of ₹82 crore, highlighting its growing impact. On the performance front, Japan's Jo Fukuda set a new men's distance record by covering 71.67 km, while Germany's Esther Pfeiffer claimed the women's title with 59.03 km, becoming her country's first-ever women's global champion.
Journey and Impact Since Inception
Since its first edition in 2014, the Wings for Life World Run has seen a total of 1,870,253 participants raise an impressive tally of 60.53 million euros. The Wings for Life foundation, founded in 2004, has supported 324 promising research projects and clinical trials through an exacting selection procedure, driving forward scientific advancements in spinal cord injury treatment.
This event serves as a diverse platform that brings together elite athletes, amateurs, and first-timers, enabling them to raise funds for a vital cause and give back to society through physical activity.
