Thane RTO Agent Arrested for Alleged Bribery in Learner's Licence Case
In a significant anti-corruption operation, a Regional Transport Office (RTO) agent was arrested in Thane for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe from an individual seeking a two-wheeler learner's licence. The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) confirmed the arrest on Friday, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb corruption in government services.
Details of the Bribery Scandal
The accused, identified as Krishnakumar Mishra, a 44-year-old resident of Bhiwandi, was caught red-handed by ACB officials. According to the official statement, Mishra demanded Rs 5,000 from a man who required a learner's licence for a two-wheeler. The complainant later discovered that the stipulated fee for this process is merely Rs 200, prompting him to approach the ACB with a formal complaint.
The arrest occurred on Thursday when Mishra was apprehended while accepting Rs 4,300 as part of the bribe. It was revealed that he had already collected Rs 700 earlier, bringing the total illicit demand to Rs 5,000. This case underscores the exploitation faced by citizens in routine administrative processes.
Legal Actions and Implications
A case has been registered against Mishra under the Prevention of Corruption Act, which carries severe penalties for public servants involved in corrupt practices. The ACB official emphasized that such operations are crucial to maintaining transparency and integrity in government departments, particularly those dealing with essential services like vehicle licensing.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in eradicating corruption, even at the grassroots level. Authorities have urged the public to report any similar instances of bribery or misconduct to help strengthen anti-corruption measures across Maharashtra.
