Sonipat Man's Suicide Exposes Rs 50 Lakh Immigration Fraud, Family Demands Justice
A tragic incident in Sonipat has brought to light the dark underbelly of illegal immigration networks, as a 31-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after consuming poison. The victim, identified as Rohit, was reportedly driven to this extreme step due to severe distress over an alleged fraud of approximately Rs 50 lakh. This sum was linked to promises made by unscrupulous agents to send his younger brother to the United States, a dream that turned into a nightmare for the family.
Family's Ordeal and Financial Ruin
According to family members, a local resident had assured them of facilitating overseas travel through a person allegedly posted with the Delhi Police. In a desperate bid to secure a better future for the younger brother, the family sold their land and managed to accumulate nearly Rs 1 crore. Out of this amount, around Rs 50 lakh was paid to the agent. However, the promises proved hollow—neither was the victim's brother sent abroad, nor was the money returned, plunging the family into financial and emotional turmoil.
Brother's Harrowing Journey and False Assurances
The deceased's brother, Mohit, detailed a harrowing sequence of events. He alleged that he was first sent to Brazil, where he was kept for nearly two months under false pretenses. Subsequently, he was moved to Mumbai and later to Ethiopia, held at these locations for extended periods with repeated assurances of being sent to the US. Ultimately, he was sent back to India, his hopes dashed and the family's savings squandered.
Threats, Intimidation, and Mental Stress
When the family demanded a refund, the accused initially promised to return the money and even issued an affidavit. However, they later reneged on this commitment. The family further claimed that they were subjected to repeated threats and intimidation, including warnings of being falsely implicated in criminal cases. This prolonged financial loss and pressure reportedly left Rohit under severe mental stress, exacerbating his despair.
Final Moments and Tragic End
On the night of March 31, Rohit was at a restaurant near Chhotu Ram Chowk with his friend Ankush, where they were consuming alcohol. It is alleged that he was provoked during the interaction, following which he consumed sulphas tablets. His condition deteriorated rapidly. Before taking this extreme step, Rohit had called his uncle and reportedly said, "Only my dead body will return home." Family members stated that this statement reflected his deteriorating mental state and deep anguish.
Police Investigation and Family's Demands
Police reached the spot after receiving information and sent the body for a post-mortem examination at a civil hospital. The family has held certain local individuals and agents responsible for the death and has demanded strict action and immediate arrests. Sonipat City SHO Inspector Anil confirmed that the deceased was a resident of Jarothi village. "No arrests have been made so far. A forensic team inspected the scene and collected samples, which have been sent to the Madhuban laboratory for analysis," he said. Police added that the investigation is underway from all angles, and further action will be taken based on the findings. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family, and the last rites were performed in the village.
Broader Implications and Concerns
This incident has once again raised serious concerns over illegal immigration networks and unscrupulous agents operating under the guise of overseas placements. It highlights the vulnerabilities of families seeking better opportunities abroad and the devastating consequences of fraud in such sensitive matters. Authorities are urged to crack down on these illicit operations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
