Palghar Tempo Driver Brutally Attacked, Soaked in Petrol Over Rs 20 Refusal
In a shocking incident of extreme violence, a tempo driver from Nalasopara was savagely beaten and doused with petrol after he refused to pay a Rs 20 'donation' at an illegal roadside eatery in Wadakhadkona, Manor, Palghar. The brutal assault occurred on Saturday night, highlighting severe law and order concerns in the region.
Violent Assault Unfolds After Driver Declines Illegal Demand
The victim, identified as Danish Khan, was transporting materials from Taloja in Navi Mumbai to Ankleshwar in Gujarat. Around 6 PM, he and a friend, also a tempo driver heading to Gujarat, stopped at Jai Ambe Dhaba for a break. After using the washroom, Khan could not locate his vehicle keys and approached the cash counter, where dhaba owner Vinod Singh was present.
Singh returned the keys but demanded Khan deposit Rs 20 into a donation box on the counter. When Khan explained he had no change and refused, Singh began hurling abuses and physically attacking him. Within moments, eight to ten staff members joined the assault, escalating the situation dramatically.
Victim Dragged, Beaten with Belts and Sticks, Then Doused in Petrol
According to Khan's police complaint, the attackers dragged him into a room behind the counter, where they continued the vicious beating using belts and sticks. In a particularly dangerous act, one of the assailants poured petrol over Khan, leaving him unconscious. He only regained consciousness later in a hospital, where he was treated for severe injuries to his face, head, chest, back, and hands.
The victim's friend, who attempted to intervene and save Khan, was also assaulted by the group, adding to the gravity of the incident. This coordinated attack underscores the brazen nature of the perpetrators.
Police Swift Action Leads to Arrests Under BNS for Attempted Murder
Manor police responded promptly, arresting dhaba owner Vinod Singh and three of his staff members. They have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempted murder, a serious charge reflecting the life-threatening nature of the assault.
Kumar Sushant, the officer in charge of Manor police station, stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and trace the remaining accused involved in the attack. The police are intensifying efforts to ensure all perpetrators face justice, with a focus on cracking down on illegal establishments operating in the area.
Broader Implications for Road Safety and Illegal Activities
This incident raises significant concerns about the safety of commercial drivers and the prevalence of illegal dhabas along highways. Key points from the case include:
- The demand for unauthorized 'donations' from travelers, which can escalate into violence.
- The need for stricter monitoring of roadside eateries to prevent such criminal activities.
- The importance of swift police intervention in cases of assault to deter future incidents.
Authorities are urging drivers to report any extortion or harassment immediately, emphasizing that such acts will not be tolerated. The community is calling for increased patrols and regulatory checks to safeguard public spaces.
