Punjab Lok Adalat Achieves Landmark Settlement of Over 5 Lakh Cases with Rs 761 Crore Awards

The first National Lok Adalat of 2026 in Punjab has delivered remarkable results, amicably settling 5,07,385 cases out of 5,69,425 taken up across the state. The proceedings awarded approximately Rs 761 crore in settlements, while also facilitating heartwarming outcomes such as the reconciliation of estranged couples and the closure of long-pending disputes.

Organizational Framework and Statewide Implementation

Organized on Saturday under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority, the Lok Adalat was held under the patronage of Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, Executive Chairman of the Punjab State Legal Services Authority, led the initiative. A total of 465 Lok Adalat Benches were constituted across districts and sub-divisions of Punjab to handle a diverse range of matters.

These included civil disputes, matrimonial conflicts, motor accident claims, banking and insurance cases, cyber fraud incidents, and other compoundable matters. The event provided litigants with a valuable opportunity to resolve disputes through conciliation and mutual settlement, emphasizing a collaborative approach to justice.

Notable Case Resolutions and Victories

Among the standout achievements was a unique initiative in Barnala, where directions were issued for the release of Rs 20,70,281 in 40 cyber fraud cases. This brought significant relief to victims whose bank funds had remained frozen. The District Legal Services Authority proactively contacted the victims after receiving details from the cyber cell and facilitated applications for fund release during the Lok Adalat proceedings.

In Mohali, a matrimonial dispute pending for over six years at the Family Court was successfully resolved. Originally filed in March 2019 under the Code of Criminal Procedure for maintenance, the case had spawned multiple civil and criminal proceedings between the spouses. Through counselling and negotiations before the Bench, the parties agreed to amicably settle all pending disputes, effectively ending the entire chain of litigation.

Another case at Mohali District Courts involved a petition for divorce by mutual consent under the Hindu Marriage Act. Following counselling during the Lok Adalat, the spouses decided to reconcile in the interest of their child and withdrew the divorce petition, showcasing the system's focus on family welfare.

Similarly, a dispute under the Guardians and Wards Act over visitation rights of a minor child was resolved through intervention and counselling. The parties agreed to a compromise, deciding to resume married life and leaving the court premises together with their child, highlighting the emotional and social benefits of the Lok Adalat mechanism.

Resolution of Long-Pending Civil and Financial Disputes

The Lok Adalat also made significant strides in addressing long-pending civil and financial disputes across Punjab. In Barnala, a civil recovery dispute dating back to 2009 was closed. Despite a decree passed in 2011 and property attachment in 2013, the matter remained unresolved until the Lok Adalat Bench intervened. The settlement satisfied the claim, leading to the release of the attachment on the defendant's property and ending nearly two decades of litigation.

At Muktsar, a maintenance dispute pending for nearly two years was amicably resolved, resulting in the rehabilitation of the applicant in the matrimonial home. In Gidderbaha, a civil dispute over possession pending since 2019 was settled, leading to the withdrawal of the suit and a refund of court fees to the plaintiff.

Additionally, a separate dispute involving specific performance and recovery of Rs 64 lakh was settled through a compromise for Rs 46 lakh, bringing the litigation to a close. The proceedings also facilitated the settlement of property disputes, accident claims, and execution petitions across various districts.

In Bathinda, a 2011 industrial tribunal award was implemented during the Lok Adalat, with an employee reinstated with continuity of service after the employer agreed to comply. This case underscores the mechanism's effectiveness in enforcing legal decisions and promoting workplace justice.

Impact and Future Implications

Legal services authorities have emphasized that the large-scale settlements highlight the growing acceptance of the Lok Adalat as a speedy and cost-effective alternative dispute resolution system. By resolving over 5 lakh cases in a single event, the initiative has significantly contributed to reducing court pendency across Punjab, alleviating the burden on the traditional judicial system.

The success of this Lok Adalat not only provides immediate relief to thousands of litigants but also sets a precedent for future efforts in promoting accessible and efficient justice. It reinforces the importance of conciliation and mutual agreement in resolving disputes, fostering a more harmonious legal environment in the state.
