Patna: 80-Year-Old Man Fatally Beaten by Son in Land Dispute; Police Swiftly Arrest Accused
In a shocking incident in Patna, an 80-year-old man was brutally beaten to death with bricks, allegedly by his own son, in the Malsalami police station area on Saturday. The victim, identified as Vijendra, succumbed to his severe injuries while being rushed to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest
Police authorities acted promptly, arresting the prime accused, Ramesh, within just six hours of the tragic incident. Preliminary investigations conducted by law enforcement officials indicate that the murder was rooted in a long-standing land dispute between the father and son.
Ramesh, who has a documented criminal history, worked as a munshi at a brick kiln, as did the victim at a different kiln, according to police statements. This professional background adds a grim layer to the crime, given the weapon used in the assault.
Patna University Announces Key Administrative Appointments
In separate developments, Patna University made significant administrative appointments on Saturday. Birendra Kumar of Patna Law College has been appointed as the officer-in-charge of the university's outsourcing cell. He will continue to serve concurrently as the professor-in-charge of PU's legal cell, ensuring continuity in legal affairs.
Additionally, Kumar Satyeendra Yadav, a teacher from the statistics department, was named the officiating superintendent of the Patna University press. This appointment is in addition to his existing academic duties, as confirmed by an official university notification.
Patna Municipal Corporation Intensifies Monsoon Preparedness Efforts
The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has ramped up its pre-monsoon preparations to combat potential waterlogging. Authorities have intensified drain desilting and manhole cleaning operations across the city. On Saturday, the additional municipal commissioner conducted inspections of all circles to review the progress of these critical infrastructure works.
The second phase of desilting, which commenced on February 15, is scheduled to continue until April 30. To expedite the process, day and night shifts have been deployed. Currently, over 53,000 manholes and 41,000 catchpits are under repair, with major drains nearing completion.
PMC Urges Property Owners to Clear Tax Dues Before Deadline
Patna Municipal Corporation has issued a strong appeal to property owners, urging them to clear all outstanding tax dues by March 31 to avail benefits under its one-time settlement scheme. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the imposition of interest and penalties on overdue amounts.
To facilitate payments, tax counters are now operating daily from 7 AM to 9 PM, including holidays. Enforcement teams demonstrated their effectiveness by recovering Rs 50 lakh from major defaulters on Saturday alone. Property owners can also make payments conveniently through the PMC portal, a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot, and various UPI applications.
Lok Adalat Settles Accident Claims Worth Rs 2.11 Crore
A Lok Adalat organized at the Patna High Court on Saturday successfully settled accident claims totaling Rs 2.11 crore. Out of 280 cases referred to the adalat, 198 were disposed of, including 28 motor vehicle accident cases. This resulted in compensation amounting to Rs 2,11,31,425 being awarded for deaths or permanent disablement.
In addition to accident claims, the Lok Adalat also resolved 146 contempt cases against government officers and 15 cases related to the payment of retirement dues for government employees, providing much-needed relief to numerous individuals and families.
