Odisha Vigilance Arrests Auditor in Bribery Sting, Recovers Massive Cash Haul

In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Odisha Vigilance Department on Tuesday evening arrested Ambika Prasad Rath, an auditor working at the office of the Regional Director of Education (RDE) in Bhubaneswar. The arrest was made following allegations that Rath accepted a bribe of Rs 4,000 from a staff member of a local degree college.

Bribe Demanded for MACP Scheme Processing

According to the official statement released by the vigilance department, the bribe was reportedly demanded to facilitate service verification and the correction of pay fixation statements under the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme. This government scheme is designed to provide financial progression to employees, making the corruption attempt particularly egregious.

The college staffer, who was the intended victim, promptly alerted the vigilance officials about the illicit demand. Acting swiftly on this information, a trap was meticulously laid, leading to Rath's apprehension while he was in the act of accepting the bribe money.

Substantial Unaccounted Cash Recovered in Raids

The case took a more serious turn later that night when vigilance teams conducted searches at Rath's residence. These raids resulted in the dramatic recovery of Rs 28.70 lakh in unaccounted cash, suggesting a pattern of corrupt activities beyond the immediate bribe allegation.

Furthermore, during the initial arrest at his office, officials seized an additional Rs 1.28 lakh from Rath's desk drawer. This money is suspected to be bribes collected earlier on the same day, indicating that the auditor may have been operating a systematic extortion scheme.

Vigilance Department's Firm Stance Against Corruption

The vigilance department's statement emphasized their commitment to rooting out corruption within government offices. "The auditor had demanded Rs 4,000 from the college staffer to facilitate drawl of pay under the MACP scheme. The staffer alerted us, following which a trap was laid and Rath was arrested," the department confirmed.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of bureaucratic corruption in administrative processes and the critical role of vigilant citizens and dedicated anti-corruption agencies in combating such malpractices. The recovery of such a substantial amount of unaccounted cash raises serious questions about the extent of corruption and underscores the need for stringent monitoring and accountability mechanisms within government departments.
