Mumbai Police Arrest Man for Rape and Extortion of Rs 33 Lakh in Gold and Cash
In a shocking case of digital-age crime, the Malwani police in Mumbai have arrested a man on serious charges of raping a woman and subsequently blackmailing her for a staggering sum of Rs 33 lakh. The accused allegedly used an obscene video, filmed without the victim's knowledge, as leverage to extort money and gold jewellery over several months.
How the Friendship Began on Facebook
According to police reports, the accused and the 41-year-old complainant first became acquainted through Facebook in the previous year. Their online interaction quickly blossomed into a friendship. The woman works as a teacher, while the accused is employed with a private company, details of which have not been disclosed by authorities.
The Disturbing Sequence of Events
As their friendship deepened, the accused invited the complainant to meet him in person at Marve beach in Malad. When she arrived, he persuaded her to accompany him to a nearby lodge, where she was allegedly raped. In a subsequent incident, he took her to another lodge near Dahisar check-naka, where she was reportedly raped again.
Most alarmingly, police state that during these encounters, the man secretly filmed the woman in compromising situations without her consent. He later used this video as a tool for blackmail, threatening to circulate it online if she did not comply with his demands for money.
The Extortion of Rs 33 Lakh
The blackmail scheme unfolded between February and September 2025. Under duress, the victim transferred funds online and handed over eight tolas of gold jewellery to the accused. The total value of these transactions amounted to approximately Rs 33 lakh, highlighting the severe financial and emotional toll on the complainant.
Legal Action and Arrest
Traumatized and exhausted by the continuous threats, the woman recently gathered the courage to approach the Malwani Police. She filed a formal complaint detailing the rape, unauthorized filming, and extortion. Following a swift investigation, police arrested the accused, who now faces multiple charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
This case underscores the dangers of online interactions turning predatory and the critical need for vigilance on social media platforms. Authorities are continuing their probe to ensure justice is served.
