Contractor Arrested in Mumbai After Tragic Death of Eight-Year-Old Boy
In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the community, Kurar Police have arrested a contractor in connection with the death of an eight-year-old boy who drowned in a water-accumulated pit at an under-construction building site in Malad East, Mumbai. The tragic event occurred last week, leading to immediate police action and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child's untimely demise.
Details of the Arrest and Legal Proceedings
The arrested individual, identified as D Patel, was produced before a Magistrate court following his detention. However, police are yet to apprehend the site engineer, Kishan, who has been named in the First Information Report (FIR) filed in this case. Authorities are actively pursuing leads to locate and arrest Kishan, emphasizing the seriousness with which they are treating this matter of alleged negligence.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
The incident took place on March 19 at a building being developed by Mauli Sai developers near the Gaondevi temple. The victim, Divyansh Maurya, a Class 3 student at a civic-run school, had ventured into the construction site at approximately 8:27 PM to retrieve his ball. According to police reports and retrieved CCTV footage, the child entered through a gap in the barricades surrounding the property.
Upon spotting his ball in a pit full of water, Divyansh attempted to use a wooden plank to steer it towards him. In a tragic turn of events, he lost his balance and fell into the pit, which contained drainage water from an upstream Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project. The FIR alleges that the accused failed to install proper fencing or security nets around the hazardous pit, despite being aware of the potential life-threatening risks.
Family Background and Initial Search Efforts
Divyansh lived with his parents and younger sister in a chawl near the Gaondevi temple, where his father operated a grocery store. On the evening of March 19, his parents last saw him playing outside their home around 7 PM. When he did not return, concern grew among family members, prompting them to lodge a missing complaint with the Kurar police.
In accordance with Supreme Court guidelines for missing minors, the case was converted into a kidnapping offence. This led to an extensive search operation involving police teams and neighbors, who combed the area throughout the night in a desperate attempt to locate the young boy.
Discovery of the Body and Aftermath
Around 3 AM, Divyansh's father, Rajesh Maurya, decided to inspect the nearby construction site. Using his mobile phone torch, he was horrified to spot a child's legs in the water-filled pit. He immediately climbed in and retrieved his son, who showed no signs of movement. Rajesh called his brother and neighbors, who rushed Divyansh to a private hospital nearby, where he was pronounced dead.
Legal Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Kurar Police have filed charges of negligence under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita against contractor D Patel, site engineer Kishan, and other concerned persons. The investigation continues as authorities work to hold all responsible parties accountable for this preventable tragedy. The community remains in mourning, with calls for stricter safety regulations at construction sites to prevent similar incidents in the future.
