A local court in Mohali has handed down a significant verdict, sentencing two persons to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in a case of attempted murder that originated from a violent altercation over a volleyball game. Court Finds Accused Guilty Under IPC Section 307

The court held the accused, identified as Amandeep Singh and Varinder Singh, guilty under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In addition to the seven-year sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each convict. Failure to pay this fine will result in an additional six months of imprisonment. The court also awarded one year of imprisonment under other relevant sections of the IPC, to be served concurrently with the main sentence.

Details of the December 2019 Incident

The case dates back to December 2019, when complainant Sukhjit Singh, a resident of Mauli Baidwan, reported the incident to the police. According to his statement, he had gone to the village ground in the evening to play volleyball with friends. During the game, a minor argument erupted with another youth over picking up the ball. Although the matter was temporarily resolved, tensions flared later.

As Sukhjit Singh was returning home with his friends, the accused, accompanied by four to five associates, arrived in a vehicle and launched a brutal attack using sticks. Sukhjit Singh was severely assaulted, and his friends were also injured when they attempted to intervene. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault, and the injured were rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.

Legal Proceedings and Conviction

Following the incident, a case of attempted murder and other relevant charges was registered against the accused. The police conducted a thorough investigation, gathering evidence and witness testimonies. After examining all the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court pronounced the sentence, firmly holding the accused accountable for their actions. Separate NDPS Case: Conviction in Narcotics and Vehicle Theft

In a related development from the same court, additional district and sessions judge Nitika Verma convicted Chanpreet Singh alias Channi, a resident of Ludhiana, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh.

According to the prosecution, a police team led by ASI Gurpartap Singh received confidential information about the accused's involvement in narcotics and vehicle theft. On June 17, 2021, a checkpoint was set up near Khanpur, where the accused was intercepted while traveling in a Brezza car from Ludhiana towards Mohali. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of narcotics and intoxicant tablets from the dashboard, and the car was suspected to be stolen. A case was registered at City Kharar police station, leading to the arrest and subsequent conviction of the accused.

This case adds to the court's recent track record of delivering stringent judgments in serious criminal matters, reinforcing the legal system's role in maintaining public order and safety.
