Man dies after fall from Le Méridien hotel in Delhi

A tragic incident unfolded in the heart of the capital on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 50-year-old man who fell from the 20th floor of the upscale Le Méridien hotel in Connaught Place. New Delhi police are investigating the case as a suspected suicide.

Timeline of the Tragic Event

According to official reports, the police control room (PCR) received a call about the incident at approximately 12:40 pm on Sunday, January 5, 2026. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the man was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital declared him dead upon arrival.

Preliminary investigation has led authorities to rule out any immediate suspicion of foul play. Officers confirmed that no formal complaint has been lodged by the family, and no allegations have been made against any individual so far in connection with the death.

Profile of the Deceased and Probable Motives

The deceased has been identified as a property dealer who resided in South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar. Police revealed that the man was survived by his wife. The couple did not have children, and his parents were also no longer alive.

During their inquiries, family members informed the police that the man had been undergoing treatment for depression and was on prescribed medication. Investigators also uncovered that he was facing significant financial stress due to problems in his business, which is being considered a contributing factor.

Police Investigation and Hotel Access

Detectives are piecing together the man's final movements. It was revealed that he had visited the same hotel earlier, staying at Le Méridien between December 25 and 26 during the Christmas period. On the day of the incident, he was reportedly present at a restaurant situated on the hotel's 20th floor.

Police believe he jumped from an open area on that floor. "Access to certain floors of the hotel require special key cards. However, one could enter the 20th floor without any key card and that may explain his presence on that floor," a senior police officer stated.

The investigation is currently focused on several key areas:

  • Reviewing CCTV footage from the hotel premises to trace his exact route and actions.
  • Examining the deceased's mobile phone and his call detail records (CDR).
  • Conducting further interviews with family and hotel staff.

No suicide note has been recovered from the scene. The police continue to probe all angles while treating the case as one of suicide, given the circumstances and background of the deceased.
