Kolkata Duo Poses as Cops, Flees with Resident's Gold in Baguiati Scam
In a brazen act of deception, two conmen posing as police officers allegedly duped Bishwaseem Kumar Nath, a resident of Baguiati in Kolkata, on Friday morning, making off with his valuable gold ornaments. According to a formal complaint filed at the Baguiati Police Station, the incident unfolded around 8:50 AM as Nath was returning home from Manik Bazar.
Details of the Deceptive Encounter
The fraudsters, riding a motorcycle, intercepted Nath in a lane near his residence. They presented what appeared to be police identity cards to establish credibility. The duo informed Nath that a robbery had recently occurred in the vicinity and requested him to remove his gold ornaments for verification purposes. To further gain his trust, they also asked another passer-by to comply with the same request.
Believing their authority, Nath handed over three gold rings and a gold chain. The conmen then placed the ornaments into a paper packet, instructed Nath to walk ahead, and shortly after returned the packet to him, advising caution before departing the scene.
The Shocking Discovery and Police Response
However, when Nath later inspected the packet, he discovered that the gold had been replaced with mere stones. By that time, the accused had already fled, leaving Nath victimized. Police authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the case. They are actively scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in this sophisticated scam.
This incident highlights a concerning trend of impersonation crimes in urban areas, urging residents to remain vigilant. The Baguiati Police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in the swift resolution of this case.
