Kanpur SIT Apprehends Key Accused in Elaborate Fake Degree and Marksheet Scandal
In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into a widespread fake degree and marksheet racket, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Kidwai Nagar police in Kanpur have successfully arrested another prime accused, Vineet Kumar Rai. The arrest was executed on Thursday from Gaushala Chauraha, bringing the total number of individuals apprehended in this case to five.
Accused's Professional Background and Fugitive Status
Vineet Kumar Rai, who had been evading authorities since the initial arrests were made, has a notable history of employment at several educational institutions. Police records indicate he previously held positions at Radha Govind University in Jharkhand, Accurate University in Gurugram, and Himalayan Itanagar University in Arunachal Pradesh. At the time of his arrest, he was associated with Monard University in Hapur.
Surveillance and Financial Transactions Uncovered
The breakthrough in locating Rai came through meticulous surveillance efforts by the police. Investigators managed to record conversations between Vineet Rai and another accused, Shailendra Kumar Ojha. These intercepted communications revealed substantial financial transactions between the two individuals, amounting to Rs 7.53 lakh in 2025.
Following his capture, Vineet Kumar Rai was promptly presented before the court on Thursday, where he was remanded to judicial custody.
Expanding Network and Interstate Connections
With Rai's arrest, the investigation has uncovered the gang's extensive network, which now shows clear links to three additional states: Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh. Authorities have launched a comprehensive search operation for three other university staff members suspected to be involved in these states.
Previous Arrests and Gang Composition
The Kidwai Nagar police had previously taken decisive action on February 18, sending four individuals to jail on charges of fabricating degrees and marksheets in exchange for monetary compensation. Those arrested included Shailendra Kumar Ojha, Nagesh Mani Tripathi, Jogendra, and Ashwani Kumar Singh.
Further investigation identified additional individuals connected to the accused network:
- Mayank Bhardwaj from Chhatarpur
- Manish, also known as Ravi, from Hyderabad
- Vineet Kumar Rai from Ghaziabad
- Shekhu and Shubham Dubey from Bhopal
Official Statement and University Connections
DCP South Deependranath Chaudhary provided crucial insights into the case, stating that Shailendra Ojha maintained connections with employees at multiple universities. This revelation underscores the sophisticated nature of the operation and suggests potential complicity within academic institutions.
The ongoing investigation continues to unravel the complexities of this elaborate scam, which has compromised the integrity of educational credentials across several states. Authorities remain vigilant as they pursue the remaining suspects and work to dismantle the entire network responsible for this fraudulent activity.
