Interstate Temple Donation Box Thief Apprehended by Mangaluru Police
In a significant breakthrough, the Bajpe police in Mangaluru have successfully arrested an interstate suspect involved in the theft of donation boxes from a local temple. The arrest marks a crucial step in curbing cross-border criminal activities targeting religious institutions.
Details of the Temple Theft Case
According to Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, a formal case was registered on March 3, 2026, concerning the theft of approximately Rs 25,000 from three donation boxes at the Sri Ramanjaneya Temple in Kenjaru village, which falls under the Bajpe police station jurisdiction. The theft involved breaking into the temple premises, highlighting a brazen act of criminality.
Arrest and Recovery of Stolen Items
Following the registration of the case, a dedicated police team was formed to track down the perpetrator. Based on confirmed intelligence, the Bajpe police arrested the accused, identified as Shabik Ahmad Sheikh Abdul Khader, a 25-year-old resident of Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu. During interrogation, Khader confessed to stealing the money from the temple's donation boxes. The police successfully recovered the stolen donation box, providing tangible evidence in the case.
Suspect's Criminal History and Modus Operandi
Investigations revealed that the accused is not a first-time offender. He is also a suspect in a theft case registered at the Brahmavar police station in Udupi. Additionally, Khader was involved in a motorcycle theft case in the Thokuru-Jokatte area under the Panambur police station jurisdiction during the last week of February 2026.
Khader's modus operandi involved traveling from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka by train to commit thefts, after which he would return to Tamil Nadu to evade capture. This pattern of interstate crime posed a challenge for local law enforcement agencies.
Police Action and Judicial Proceedings
The arrest was carried out by a team led by Bajpe police station inspector Balakrishna, with support from crime staff members Noothan, Rajesh, and Prakash. The accused was presented before the court, which remanded him in judicial custody, ensuring he faces legal consequences for his actions.
Implications for Temple Security
This incident underscores the vulnerability of religious institutions to theft and the need for enhanced security measures. The swift action by the Mangaluru police serves as a deterrent to similar crimes and reassures the community of their commitment to protecting sacred spaces.
