Florida Man Arrested in Fatal Upper East Side Hit-and-Run Incident
A tragic hit-and-run accident on the Upper East Side of New York City has led to the arrest of a Florida man, following the death of a pedestrian in the early hours of Friday morning. The victim, identified as 44-year-old Terrill Jenkins, was walking near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and East 61st Street just after 4:30 am when he was struck by a tractor-trailer.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to police reports and the criminal complaint, a red oil truck was backing through the intersection when it ran over Jenkins. The driver did not stop immediately after the impact. Instead, the truck pulled forward, and the driver exited the vehicle, walked over to Jenkins' body, and then returned to the truck before driving away from the scene.
Witness Charlie Reyes described the harrowing moment he found Jenkins in the street. "They put him on the sidewalk," Reyes said. "He looked in bad shape, and I told him to be strong ... 'Be strong. You're gonna be all right, buddy.' I never know he passed away." Jenkins was on his way to work at a Home Depot on First Avenue and was just three blocks away when the crash occurred, as confirmed by his family.
Arrest and Charges
Several hours later, around 7 a.m., 33-year-old Vincent Spano from Palm Harbor, Florida, arrived at a Brooklyn NYPD precinct, stating that he thought he may have struck something. Officers quickly linked Spano to the hit-and-run incident and arrested him. He now faces serious charges, including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failure to exercise due care.
Peter Mulligan III, Jenkins' cousin, expressed his dismay at the driver's actions. "The driver thought about himself and didn't do the moral thing," he said, adding that he found several aspects of the driver's behaviour puzzling and concerning.
Community and Legal Implications
This incident has raised questions about road safety and driver accountability in busy urban areas like New York City. The arrest highlights the importance of adhering to traffic laws and the severe consequences of fleeing an accident scene, especially when it results in a fatality.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and Spano is expected to face legal proceedings in the coming weeks. The community mourns the loss of Terrill Jenkins, a hardworking individual whose life was cut short in this tragic event.
