A terrifying fire erupted in a residential building in north east Delhi's Dayalpur area early Sunday morning, prompting dramatic escapes and a swift rescue operation by authorities. The incident, which occurred in a structure comprising a ground floor and five additional storeys, resulted in four individuals jumping from the first floor to evade suffocating smoke, while firefighters successfully evacuated four others from the upper levels.
Early Morning Emergency and Suspected Cause
According to officials from the Delhi Fire Services, an emergency call reporting the blaze was received at approximately 3:50 AM. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire originated in the building's parking area on the ground floor. It is believed that two scooters and a motorcycle caught fire in this section, triggering the incident. The building, constructed over an area of roughly 50 square yards, quickly became engulfed in smoke, which spread rapidly to the upper floors, trapping residents above.
Desperate Escape and Minor Injuries
Before fire tenders could arrive at the scene, four occupants made a harrowing decision to jump from the first floor in a bid to escape the thick, toxic smoke. The individuals included Nikhat (22), Rashida (50), Soni (25), and a two-year-old child named Ashif. All four were promptly transported to Jag Pravesh Chand Hospital, where they received first aid treatment for minor injuries sustained during their leap. Fortunately, their conditions were not serious, and they were discharged after medical attention.
Firefighters Execute Successful Rescue Operation
Meanwhile, Delhi Fire Service personnel launched a coordinated rescue mission upon arrival. They managed to safely evacuate four other family members from the upper floors of the building. The rescued individuals were identified as Suved (12), Duved (10), Aarifa (28), and Farah (14). Firefighters accessed the second, third, and fourth floors to bring them to safety, demonstrating commendable bravery and efficiency under challenging circumstances.
Fire Contained and Officials' Assessment
The firefighting teams worked diligently to bring the blaze under control. The operation concluded by around 6:20 AM, with fire units returning to their stations. Officials later clarified that the fire was primarily concentrated near the staircase area. It was the dense smoke, rather than the flames themselves, that posed the greatest danger, effectively trapping residents on the higher floors and necessitating the dramatic escapes and rescues.

This fire incident follows another alarming event that occurred just days earlier in Delhi. On Friday, a fire broke out in a residential building in north west Delhi's Tri Nagar locality, injuring six members of a family, including a three-year-old child. In that case as well, the fire was linked to a motorcycle parked near a staircase, which ignited due to an electrical short-circuit. Additionally, cosmetics stored dangerously close to the vehicle caught fire, exacerbating the situation. These back-to-back incidents underscore ongoing fire safety vulnerabilities in residential buildings across the city, raising urgent questions about preventive measures and public awareness.
