AP Police Fast-Track 470 Convictions for Crimes Against Women

In a significant move to bolster women and child safety, Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta has announced a rigorous, expedited investigation and trial process for related crimes. The police chief, speaking on Saturday, emphasized a strict zero-tolerance policy aimed at delivering swift justice and stringent punishment to offenders.

Zero-Tolerance Policy and Fast-Track Convictions

The Andhra Pradesh police have implemented a specialized speed trial monitoring system to track cases closely from filing to verdict. This initiative has already yielded substantial results. Official data reveals that courts across the state delivered judgments in 470 cases between June 2024 and January 2, 2026. A notable surge was seen in December 2025 alone, with 28 convictions secured.

The spectrum of punishments handed down underscores the severity with which these crimes are being treated. The breakdown includes:

  • Death sentences in six cases
  • Life imprisonment in 132 cases
  • 25 years of imprisonment in seven cases
  • 20 years in 103 cases
  • 10 years in 56 cases
  • Sentences between five to seven years in 65 cases
  • Less than five years' imprisonment in 87 cases

District-Wise Performance and Legal Framework

Vizianagaram district led the state with an impressive 49 convictions, setting a high benchmark for law enforcement efficiency. It was followed by the NTR Commissionerate with 37 convictions, Eluru with 34, SPSR Nellore with 32, and Visakhapatnam with 31 convictions.

The adoption of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has further accelerated the judicial process in several districts. Key regions including East Godavari, Kakinada, Krishna, and Visakhapatnam have reported fast-tracked convictions under this updated legal framework.

Enhanced Infrastructure and Proactive Measures

To institutionalize this focus, a dedicated women and child safety wing office has been established in Tadepalli. This is complemented by enhanced surveillance measures across the state. DGP Gupta highlighted that special attention is being given to POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) cases and rape cases to ensure they are prioritized at every stage.

On the ground, 164 Shakti teams are operational as rapid response units, answering calls received through the Dial 112 emergency service and the Shakti SOS alert system. For easier reporting, complaints can also be lodged via the dedicated Shakti WhatsApp number: 79934 85111.

Beyond enforcement, the police are investing in prevention. Extensive awareness programs have been conducted, training approximately 4.06 lakh (406,000) girls in schools and colleges across Andhra Pradesh in essential self-defence techniques. This two-pronged strategy of strict legal action combined with public empowerment aims to create a safer environment for women and children in the state.
