Andhra Pradesh Set to Establish Its First Law Academy in Vijayawada

In a significant development for the legal community, Andhra Pradesh is poised to get its first law academy, as proposed by Bezawada Bar Association (BBA) President A.K. Basha. This initiative aims to enhance ethical legal practice, judicial discipline, and constitutional values while fostering better relations between the bar and the bench.

Proposal Details and Objectives

Basha, who recently completed one year in office, outlined the academy's goals during his tenure review. The proposed institution will function autonomously, focusing on legal education, continuing legal education, and professional development for advocates. It plans to collaborate with bar associations, universities, judicial academies, and other legal bodies to ensure comprehensive training and research.

Key features of the academy include:

  • Imparting training, skill development, and research in law.
  • Mentoring judicial services aspirants, law students, junior advocates, and legal professionals.
  • Enhancing skills in legal drafting, advocacy, professional ethics, and judicial knowledge.
  • Providing free or subsidized coaching for meritorious students, economically weaker sections, women candidates, and physically challenged law graduates.

Background and Leadership

A.K. Basha, elected as BBA president last year, is the first from the principal minority community to hold this position in nearly eight decades. He has been instrumental in forming the Andhra Pradesh State Bar Federation (APSBF), an umbrella organization for all bar associations in the state, where he serves as convener. Under his leadership, the BBA has undertaken several initiatives, including setting up a replica of Sabarmati Ashram in Vijayawada to promote Gandhian and secular values among youth.

This proposal marks a milestone in Andhra Pradesh's legal landscape, aiming to bridge gaps in legal education and promote a more ethical and disciplined judicial system.
