Two Injured in Ahmedabad Car Crash; Driver Allegedly Drunk
In a disturbing incident early on Tuesday, at least two individuals sustained injuries and two vehicles were severely damaged when a speeding car collided with a taxi and then a stationary car near Vastrapur lake in Ahmedabad. The driver of the car that caused the accident, identified as Gajendra Patel, a 22-year-old resident of Changodar, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Details of the Accident
The incident occurred around 4:30 AM near the Bharat Petroleum pump close to Vastrapur lake. According to the complaint filed by Nirav Thakkar, the 42-year-old driver of the taxi that was hit, he was en route to pick up a passenger when the accident unfolded. Thakkar stated that he had reached Shahid Chowk when a speeding hatchback, coming from the wrong side, crashed head-on into his vehicle. The impact caused the taxi to spin violently.
In a subsequent collision, the same car again struck the taxi's rear, resulting in significant damage to its tyres and body. Thakkar further reported that the car also collided with another stationary vehicle and hit two pedestrians, who were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The two injured individuals are currently receiving care, though their conditions have not been disclosed.
Allegations of Intoxication and Police Action
Thakkar alleged that the driver, Gajendra Patel, was apprehended by bystanders at the scene and appeared to be intoxicated. Witnesses corroborated this claim, leading to immediate police intervention. The Ahmedabad police have registered a case against Patel for rash and negligent driving under relevant traffic laws. Additionally, he has been booked under the Prohibition Act due to the suspicion of alcohol consumption, highlighting the serious legal consequences of driving under the influence.
