PVVNL Launches Smart Prepaid Meters to Revolutionize Power Distribution in Meerut

In a significant move towards modernizing electricity services, the Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (PVVNL) announced the rollout of smart prepaid meters on Monday. Officials described this initiative as a "modern, transparent, and reliable" step in the digital transformation of power distribution, aimed at empowering consumers with greater control and efficiency.

Key Features and Consumer Advantages

During a press conference held at the DISCOM headquarters, Urja Bhawan, Managing Director Ravish Gupta detailed the benefits of the new system. He emphasized that the prepaid meters will allow consumers to recharge electricity in advance and monitor their usage in real time. This feature is designed to help users manage their consumption more effectively, potentially leading to cost savings and reduced wastage.

A comprehensive presentation was made to electronic and print media, highlighting the technical aspects and consumer-centric advantages. Gupta urged all consumers to ensure their mobile numbers are correctly registered to receive timely SMS alerts. These alerts will cover critical updates such as consumption levels, balance notifications, and service information, with assurances that no actions will be taken without prior notice to users.

Operational Details and Incentives

Under this scheme, consumers will benefit from several practical features:

  • No Security Deposit: Users are not required to pay any security money, reducing initial financial burdens.
  • Continuous Supply: A positive prepaid balance must be maintained to avoid disruption, but efforts are underway to restore supply within two hours of recharge if disconnection occurs.
  • Multiple Account Linking: Up to three electricity accounts can be linked to a single mobile number, simplifying management for households or businesses.

Director (Commercial) Sanjay Jain added that the system ensures transparent billing and periodic SMS alerts, enhancing trust and convenience. As an added incentive, consumers will receive a 2% rebate on prepaid recharges, making the transition more appealing financially.

Current Implementation and Future Goals

PVVNL has already installed approximately 14.95 lakh smart meters across its operational areas, marking substantial progress in this digital shift. Officials appealed for consumer cooperation with ongoing installations, emphasizing that this initiative will strengthen a more consumer-friendly and efficient power distribution system in the long term.

The rollout is part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure and service delivery, positioning PVVNL as a leader in adopting innovative technologies for public utility management.
