Prayagraj Police Finalizes Crowd Plan for 2026 Magh Mela, Expects 15 Crore Devotees
Prayagraj Police Readies Crowd Plan for 2026 Magh Mela

With the grand Magh Mela set to commence on January 3, 2026, in Prayagraj, the local administration has swung into high gear to prepare for the massive influx of pilgrims. In a crucial step, the mela police, along with district officials, conducted a thorough verification of the crowd movement plan on Thursday, focusing on routes connecting the city's major railway stations to the sacred Sangam area.

Verifying the Pilgrim Pathways

A high-level joint team, including District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Dr. Ajay Pal, and Superintendent of Police (Magh Mela) Neeraj Pandey, personally inspected the proposed entry and exit routes. The inspection covered the pathways from four key railway stations: Prayagraj Junction, Prayag, Rambagh, and Jhunsi. The team assessed arrangements for passenger flow, designated holding areas, and essential facility points to ensure a seamless journey for devotees from their arrival point to the Sangam ghats.

The authorities have set an ambitious internal deadline of December 15 to complete all major arrangements, leaving no room for last-minute hurdles. The scale of the event is monumental, with officials anticipating a staggering 12 to 15 crore devotees over the 44-day period. Daily, an average of 12 to 15 lakh pilgrims are expected to take the holy dip at the Sangam confluence.

Leveraging Experience and Technology for Safety

Drawing from the resounding success of the 2025 Maha Kumbh management, the police plan to deploy a similar, refined model. Experienced personnel who managed static points during the Kumbh will be reassigned to 32 static points between the mela campus and railway stations to regulate crowd flow. SP Neeraj Pandey acknowledged the "mega challenge" of regulating such enormous crowds and emphasized that a detailed blueprint is now in place.

Technology will be a cornerstone of the management strategy. The Integrated Control & Command Centre (ICCC) will serve as the nerve center, enabling round-the-clock monitoring for rapid response. The plan heavily incorporates AI-powered cameras, drones, and clearly marked holding areas to preemptively manage crowd surges and ensure devotee safety.

A Model for Large-Scale Gatherings

The Uttar Pradesh government's orchestration of the 2025 Maha Kumbh has been recognized globally as a benchmark for managing massive gatherings with precision. The administration aims to replicate this exemplary feat of planning and execution for the Magh Mela. "Separate entry and exit routes will be designated to maintain a steady flow," stated SP Pandey, highlighting the focus on systematic movement to prevent bottlenecks and chaos.

The final verified plan represents a comprehensive effort by the Prayagraj Mela Authority, Mela Police, Prayagraj Police Commissionerate, and the District Administration. Their collaborative work aims not just at management, but at facilitating a spiritually fulfilling and safe experience for the millions of devotees converging on the Sangam city for one of Hinduism's most significant pilgrimages.
