The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Isha Outreach, a unit of the Isha Foundation, on Friday. This agreement, spanning five years, entrusts the foundation with the operation and maintenance of the Bans Ghat crematorium.
Scope of the Agreement
Under this five-year arrangement, Isha Outreach will oversee the management of electric crematoriums, wood-based cremation systems, and various public utility services at the site. Additionally, the foundation will be responsible for maintaining accurate records, implementing scientific waste disposal methods, and handling utility payments. The goal is to create a transparent and modern management system that ensures dignified funeral services for the community.
Fee Structure and Cremation Options
Funeral services at the crematorium are proposed to be offered at a nominal fee, ranging between Rs 3,500 and Rs 5,000. This fee may be revised periodically based on operational requirements. Families who opt for traditional cremation methods will continue to bear the cost of timber. However, both PMC and the Isha Foundation are keen on promoting electric cremation systems, aligning with environmental standards and sustainability goals.
Infrastructure Upgrades
The Bans Ghat crematorium recently underwent significant upgrades carried out by the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (Buidco) under the Patna Smart City Mission. The revamped facility now includes prayer halls, waiting rooms, and water storage infrastructure. These enhancements aim to provide a more comfortable and dignified environment for families during their time of grief.
Signing Ceremony and Future Plans
The MoU was officially signed by city engineer Bindu Rajak and Isha Outreach representative Yuvarajan, in the presence of municipal commissioner Yashpal Meena. Officials have expressed optimism that this collaboration will serve as a model for other cities in Bihar, potentially being replicated to improve crematorium management across the state.
This initiative follows a decision by the Patna Smart City Ltd board to transfer the upgraded crematorium facility to PMC for professional management and maintenance. The partnership is expected to bring efficiency, transparency, and environmental consciousness to funeral services in Patna.
